Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle substance testing services in St. Paris, Ohio. If you're in need of a hair-based drug or alcohol assessment, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in this area, providing services through nationwide centers. Generally, you will need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body for testing. Our tests cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other personalized testing solutions.

Recently, the approach to drug screening has increasingly included using hair follicle tests. Many companies, judicial branches, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer these over traditional urine tests. This testing method is ideal for organizations with zero-tolerance policies, legal systems, and those on probation. The main advantage is its extended detection window of up to 90 days, collected under supervision and difficult to manipulate. For recent drug use within the last five days, however, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair captures chemical indicators in the growing hair strand, offering a prolonged record of substance use. When harvested near the scalp, hair can reflect up to a three-month period for drug and alcohol detection. Hair sampling is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient for transportation.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp equates to 100mg, the optimal sample for examination and verification. For EtG, additional substances, and/or over 10-panel tests, a 150mg specimen is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale for measuring. If scalp hair isn't accessible, an equivalent measure of body hair is viable. By head hair, we mean scalp hair only, whereas body hair implies all other types such as facial and axillary.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test involves four principal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial handling of a specimen within a lab's framework. It encompasses verifying proper sealing and shipping of the sample, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and ensuring all supplementary data is recorded, especially when absent from an electronic chain of custody.

Screening serves as a preliminary evaluation for contraband substances. Though cost-effective for excluding drug usage in most samples, a positive outcome necessitates further authentication for legal admissibility. Any samples indicating presumptive positivity during Screening must undergo an additional confirmation step.

For a presumptively positive sample found in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are retrieved from hair at notably lower levels compared to other techniques such as urine or oral fluid, which makes hair drug analysis the most complex technique to execute.

Confirmation of any detected drugs via screening occurs through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples indicated as presumptive positives undergo cleaning before confirmation as required. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the entire lab process is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification, and according to ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests are capable of identifying substance use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests, which cover a shorter period.
  • Difficult to falsify: The ability to deceive a hair drug test is minimal, thereby enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Delivers historical insights: It can trace patterns of substance use over time, rather than merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Not suitable for recent usage: It requires around 5-7 days for substances to register in hair samples.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs compared to alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair pigmentation and individual growth variations can influence the levels of drug residues in the hair.

Note: Often termed as "hair follicle tests", these assessments analyze the hair strand itself, and not the follicle located under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
