Certified Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug examinations in Christiansburg, Ohio. For those requiring a hair or alcohol screening, our expertise in hair testing is unparalleled, with facilities across all cities nationwide equipped to conduct hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair are needed from the head or body. Hair testing options can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized to specific needs.

Recently, the preference for drug testing has shifted towards hair follicle examinations. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts are insisting on hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair tests particularly suit employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, legal courts, and probationers. The major advantage of hair testing is its extended detection window, up to 90 days, obtained through direct observation and hard to falsify. However, urine tests remain more precise for confirming substance use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair strand testing is now recognized as an effective method for identifying the use of drugs and alcohol. Hair offers a long-term record of alcohol and other drugs by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When taken close to the scalp, hair can indicate up to a three-month history of alcohol and drug use. Hair is straightforward to collect, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (akin to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the perfect amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG add-ons and/or assessments beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It is recommended to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable quantity of body hair can be gathered. When mentioning head hair, it refers specifically to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four principal phases in the laboratory procedure for processing a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the preliminary handling of a sample into a lab's system. This step ensures that the sample was securely sealed and delivered, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data input missing from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial quick evaluation for substances of abuse. While it’s a cost-effective method to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive result from Screening requires confirmation to be legally acceptable in court. Samples with presumptive positive outcomes in Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample show a presumptive positive result during the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive Screening result is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that show presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation as needed. The entire laboratory protocol from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, compared to urine tests which have a more limited detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is highly challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides historical patterns: It can reflect a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect immediate use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Variables such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is on the hair strand and not the follicle below the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Christiansburg, OH, hair follicle testing surpasses urine tests through superior detection capabilities and reliability. Hair tests offer a longer detection window, effectively revealing drug use over months, unlike the brief timeframe of urine tests. This makes them ideal for environments with stringent drug policies, as they provide a comprehensive substance history of the individual.

Employers and institutions leaning towards hair testing do so because of its resistance to evasion, unlike urine tests that are vulnerable to tampering. The in-depth analysis provided by hair testing translates to more accurate evaluations, ensuring that zero-tolerance policies are robustly enforced. Thus, hair tests present a more thorough and secure alternative for drug screening.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle tests in Christiansburg, OH offer an expanded detection window, uncovering substance use histories up to 90 days. This advantage grants employers a more thorough assessment of an individual's drug habits over time. The extended period of detection offered by hair follicle testing equips businesses with the tools to make knowledgeable hiring and employee retention decisions.

This testing method's expansive detection scope markedly enhances workforce management. By shining a light on long-term substance usage, it enables a proactive stance in handling potential drug-related issues, fostering a healthier, safer workplace environment. This long-range view afforded by hair testing outstrips the shorter windows available through traditional methods.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Christiansburg, OH, hair follicle testing provides a tamper-resistant drug screening alternative, significantly reducing the potential for sample manipulation. Unlike traditional methods, hair tests are challenging to adulterate, securing the authenticity of results and bolstering confidence in the outcomes. Employers can rely on this steadfast testing process to maintain the integrity of their workplace policies.

The robustness of hair follicle testing lies in its collection process, which is observed and documented, ensuring the sample remains uncompromised throughout. This method's resistance to tampering eliminates doubts about the veracity of the results, fostering a transparent testing environment that employers and testing officials can fully trust.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
