Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Corning, New York. If you require a drug or alcohol hair test, our centers, located in every city nationwide, specialize in such testing. Generally, a sample of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is needed. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be custom-configured for specific testing requirements.

Recently, drug testing methods increasingly employ hair follicle tests. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts favor this over urine testing. Hair tests are popular with organizations enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies, legal systems, and probation departments. Key advantages include a longer detection period, typically up to 90 days, in a monitored collection process, making it nearly impossible to manipulate. For the last 5 days, however, urine tests remain most precise.

What it is, How it works

The application of hair testing has become widely recognized as an effective method for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. Hair captures a long-standing record of substance use by embedding biomarkers in the hair as it grows. When sampled near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to three months for alcohol and drugs. The collection process for hair is straightforward, making it challenging to tamper with and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches composed of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG extras and/or tests with over 10 panels, it is advised to use 150mg of the specimen. We suggest utilizing a jeweler's scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair is acceptable. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" encompasses other types like facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory drug test procedure involves four essential stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves integrating a sample into the lab's system. This step consists of verifying the sample's secure seal and proper shipment, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody.

Screening entails an initial assessment for substances of abuse. Even though it is a cost-saving step to eliminate drug usage for most samples, any positive screenings must be validated for legal admissibility. Samples testing positive during Screening require additional confirmation.

Presumptive positives in the Screening step lead to extracting more hair from the initial sample for the Extraction stage. In this phase, drug substances are extracted at concentrations much lower than those in other methods (such as urine or oral fluids), making hair drug testing particularly challenging.

To confirm positive screenings, a combination of GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS is employed. Samples showing presumptive positives undergo washing before further confirmation if necessary. The entire gamut from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can trace drug use up to 90 days back, whereas urine tests cover a shorter timeframe.
  • Resistance to tampering: Cheating hair drug tests is extremely difficult, enhancing reliability.
  • Chronological insight: Hair tests offer a record of drug use patterns over time, not just immediate consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Detectability in hair takes about 5-7 days post-drug intake.
  • Price: Hair drug testing typically incurs higher costs than other methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Often termed as "hair follicle tests", these tests actually examine the hair strand, not the follicle below the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Corning, NY, surpasses traditional urine tests by offering extensive detection capabilities. The reliability of hair tests stems from their longer detection window, identifying substance use up to 90 days.

Urine tests, while standard, lack the comprehensive accuracy of hair testing. Hair samples are resistant to tampering, ensuring authentic results that can guide informed decisions.

Extended Detection Window

In Corning, NY, the extended detection period of hair testing provides a detailed view of drug use history. Hair follicle tests can detect substances up to 90 days, outclassing other methods.

This duration offers a holistic approach for employers, revealing patterns over time and allowing for better assessments of substance use habits, which is critical in maintaining workplace safety.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Corning, NY, benefits from the tamper-resistant nature of hair follicle tests. The collection process minimizes manual interference, preserving sample integrity.

These tests are virtually cheat-proof, making them a trusted choice for employers. By using hair samples, organizations can rely on the test results to be genuine and accurate, reducing the risk of false negatives or tampering.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
