Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in New Brunswick, NJ. For those in need of a drug or alcohol test via hair analysis, we excel in hair testing and have facilities across all cities nationwide capable of these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the scalp or body is required. Hair testing can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

The hair follicle drug test has grown in popularity for drug testing in recent years. Many employers, judiciary systems, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer hair drug tests over the traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are chosen by employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and for individuals on probation. They offer an extended detection window for substance use, approximately 90 days, collected under supervision, making them challenging to manipulate. Nonetheless, urine tests remain more precise for identifying drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as a formidable means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drug intake by ensnaring biomarkers within the fiber matrix of the hair as it grows. When collected near the scalp, the hair offers approximately a 90-day detection timeframe for both alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, somewhat hard to tamper with, and convenient to send.

A 1.5-inch segment containing around 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil thickness) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, considered the optimal amount for testing and validation. For EtG, additional testing, and/or assessments beyond 10 panels, a 150mg quantity is preferred. Evaluating the sample on a jeweler’s scale is advised. If scalp hair is absent, an equivalent volume of body hair can be utilized. 'Head hair' refers strictly to scalp hair. 'Body hair' covers all other hair categories (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The key stages in lab handling of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the foundational handling of a sample within a laboratory's framework. This task involves ensuring the sample's sealing and shipment integrity, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody protocol.

Screening constitutes an initial rapid assessment for abuse drugs. Although Screening is a cost-efficient way to exclude drug presence in the majority of cases, a judicially acceptable positive requires confirmation. Presumptive positive samples in Screening need follow-up confirmation.

For any sample preliminarily positive in Screening, additional hair is taken from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. In Extraction, drug compounds are retrieved from hair at significantly lesser concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug checks the most rigorous methodology.

A positive Screening finding must undergo Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positives are cleansed prior to the Confirmation phase, when necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation criteria.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike shorter-term urine tests.
  • Resistance to deceit: A hair drug test is hard to alter, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Chronological data provision: It offers a timeline of drug consumption, rather than immediate use only.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to detect recent intake: Drugs become traceable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests cost more than other testing alternatives.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: While often called "hair follicle tests", the examination targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why does hair follicle testing surpass urine testing in New Brunswick, NJ? Hair testing boasts significant advantages over traditional urine analysis. Its superior detection accuracy and reliability make it the preferred choice for many. Unlike urine tests, which have a limited detection window, hair tests can uncover drug use over a prolonged period, making them invaluable for thorough screenings.

The comprehensive detection range of hair follicle testing ensures it detects even minimal traces of drug use, providing a more complete picture. Employers, legal entities, and rehabilitation centers favor hair tests for their ability to offer insights into an individual's substance use history, making it a key tool in maintaining a drug-free environment.

Extended Detection Window

In New Brunswick, NJ, hair follicle testing is renowned for its expansive detection window, capable of identifying drug use over a 90-day timeframe. This extended period provides employers with an encompassing view of an individual’s substance history, facilitating informed hiring and maintenance of workplace safety standards.

The ability to trace back drug use for months offers a holistic view, a feature absent in other testing methods. It allows organizations to see past short-term abstinence and assess long-term behavioral patterns, crucial for roles requiring sobriety and trust. This insight empowers employers to make educated decisions based on comprehensive substance profiles.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in New Brunswick, NJ, minimizes the risk of tampered samples, offering reliable results. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
