Located in Jackson, Mississippi, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments. Our specialization in hair-based drug and alcohol testing is supported by a network of testing centers across all U.S. cities, delivering complete services. Typically, a sample requires 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, whether from the head or body, to be effectively analyzed for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized testing needs.

The use of hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly prevalent among the methods used for drug screening in recent years. Recognized by many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals, hair follicle tests often replace traditional urine tests due to their superior detection capabilities. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, the legal system, and probation officers favor hair tests for their extended detection window of up to 90 days and minimal chance of tampering. However, for drug use screening within the last 5 days, urine tests remain more effective.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is renowned for effectively identifying alcohol and drug usage. It records a prolonged history of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair. When gathered near the scalp, a hair sample can offer up to a 3-month detection period for drugs and alcohol. It's straightforward to collect, quite resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch lock of around 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, ideal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, supplementary tests, and tests over 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is suggested. Using a jeweler’s scale is advised for measuring the specimen. If scalp hair is not available, a similar amount of body hair can be collected. References to head hair denote scalp hair exclusively. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial processing of a sample into the laboratory’s system. This step includes verifying the proper sealing and shipping of samples, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry that an electronic chain of custody system does not provide.

Screening is an initial swift examination for drugs of abuse. Though Screening is a cost-efficient approach to exclude drug use in most samples, any positive results require confirmation to hold up in court. Samples that are initially positive in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

If Screening indicates a presumptive positive, additional hair is taken from the initial sample for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at a much lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is among the most complex methodologies.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are cleansed before confirmation if needed. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is regulated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug usage for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a briefer detection period.
  • Challenging to tamper with: It's very hard to falsify a hair drug test, enhancing accuracy of the results.
  • Historical data provision: It shows a pattern of drug use over a timeframe, beyond just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Undetectable recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately within 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth patterns can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Despite occasionally being called "hair follicle tests", the analysis examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle testing with urine tests in Jackson, MS, hair testing emerges superior thanks to its long detection period. Hair tests capture a 90-day snapshot of substance use, as opposed to the 3-5 day window typical of urine tests. This expanded timeframe offers a more accurate reflection of an individual's habits.

Furthermore, for individuals under scrutiny by employers or legal entities, hair follicle tests are less prone to manipulation, delivering dependable results every time. The comprehensive nature of hair testing ensures it's a trusted choice in drug detection.

Extended Detection Window

Employers in Jackson, MS, rely on hair follicle testing for its extended detection window, spanning up to 90 days. This broad timeframe provides a holistic view of an individual's substance use behavior.

A longer detection period is particularly valuable when monitoring chronic use, enabling employers to make informed decisions based on a substantial history rather than recent consumption alone.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

The tamper-resistant nature of hair follicle testing makes it a preferred method in Jackson, MS. This process significantly reduces the likelihood of sample manipulation, ensuring reliable outcomes.

By using a method that's difficult to alter, hair tests uphold integrity, providing businesses with unquestionable results. The secure nature of this testing method assures employers of accurate substance use assessment.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
