Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations in Flowood, Mississippi. Whether you require a drug or alcohol hair test, Accredited Drug Testing is proficient in hair analysis, with facilities available nationwide for conducting such tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body are sufficient. Tests can evaluate for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customized options tailored for specific needs.

Recently, drug testing methodologies have increasingly adopted hair follicle analyses. More employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals opt for hair drug testing over the traditional urine test. Organizations with strict no-drug policies, the judicial system, and probation officers employ these tests. A significant advantage is the extensive detection timeline of up to 90 days, coupled with an observed sample collection process, making it difficult to falsify. Nonetheless, for revealing drug activity within the past five days, urine tests remain the premier choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective mechanism in detecting the consumption of drugs and alcohol. By embedding biomarkers within the strands of hair as it grows, it provides a comprehensive history of substance use. When taken close to the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to around three months for alcohol and other drugs. It's easy to gather, relatively hard to alter, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch length of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly a #2 pencil’s diameter) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the perfect amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, extras, or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. Use a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, a similar quantity of body hair may be used. In discussing head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair includes other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test result involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first step where a sample is introduced into a lab’s system. This process ensures proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any required data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody.

Screening serves as an initial rapid examination for illicit drugs. Although Screening is cost-efficient for ruling out drug usage in most cases, a positive result requires confirmation for court admissibility. Samples that indicate potential positives in Screening must undergo additional confirmation.

If Screening suggests a positive, additional hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. This phase involves drawing drugs from hair at a tremendously lower concentration than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), illustrating why hair drug screening is particularly challenging.

Confirmation of a positive screen is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumed positive outcomes undergo cleansing before confirmation as needed. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning through Confirmation adheres to CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection period: Hair drug assessments can identify drug consumption for as long as 90 days, unlike urine assessments which have a shorter detection time frame.
  • Tough to deceive: Manipulating a hair drug assessment is significantly challenging, enhancing result reliability.
  • Delivers historical insight: It demonstrates a sequence of drug use over time, beyond immediate consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent consumption: Drugs become traceable in hair about 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments are typically costlier than alternative testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite being often called "hair follicle tests", the testing involves the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle testing to urine tests in Flowood, MS, the benefits are clear. Hair tests provide superior detection accuracy and reliability. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
