Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in North Mankato, Minnesota. For those in need of hair-based drug or alcohol screening, our centers are equipped to perform these tests across various cities nationally. Typically, hair 1.5 to 2 inches long from the head or body can be used for testing. Our tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or provide tailored testing solutions.

The trend in drug testing has increasingly leaned towards hair follicle methods. This approach is now preferred by many employers, courts, and substance abuse experts over traditional urine testing. Hair tests serve organizations enforcing strict drug-free policies, including employers, courts, and probation professionals. A key advantage is their ability to detect drug use over the past 90 days, ensuring accuracy and reducing cheating. Yet, urine tests remain more precise for very recent use detection, within five days.

What it is, How it works

The usage of hair testing has become regarded as a formidable method in identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair acts as a long-term diary of alcohol and drug exposure by capturing biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When cut adjacent to the scalp, hair can reveal substance use over roughly the past 3 months. Collection of hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

Acquiring a 1.5-inch section of around 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the head yields 100mg of hair, which is the preferred amount for primary assessment and verification. For EtG extensions and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale to measure the weight of the specimen is recommended. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a similar quantity of body hair is acceptable. Head hair pertains specifically to scalp hair, whereas body hair covers all other types such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test findings involves four pivotal stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the preliminary incorporation of a sample into a lab’s system. This stage ensures that the sample was securely sealed and transported, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any data entries not handled by an electronic chain of custody mechanism.

Screening conducts a rapid initial evaluation for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient strategy for excluding drug use in most samples, any positive results need confirmation to be legally acceptable. Samples indicating a presumptive positive in Screening are subject to further confirmation.

Should a sample show a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are retrieved from hair at concentrations much lower than other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), illustrating why hair drug testing is the most complex approach to execute.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcome is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo a wash before confirmation if required. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review per both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter detection period of urine tests.
  • Hard to deceive: Manipulating a hair drug test result is extremely difficult, increasing result accuracy.
  • Delivers historical insight: Offers a usage pattern over an extended timeframe, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after consumption.
  • Costly: Hair drug tests typically cost more than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth patterns can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the test itself evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
