For hair follicle drug assessments, Trusted Drug Testing offers full testing services in Rochester, Michigan. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol screening, our expertise in hair testing is available nationwide. Our centers across all cities can conduct these tests. Typically, hair from the crown or body, measuring 1.5 to 2 inches, is required. Hair assessments can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, along with other specialized testing choices.

Lately, drug testing methodologies have adopted hair follicle tests more frequently. Organizations, judiciary bodies, and substance misuse experts now prefer hair drug screenings over standard urine tests. These tests aid employers enforcing strict no-drug policies, legal systems, and those under probation. Their prominent advantage is the extended detection period of up to 90 days, conducted under observation, making it nearly foolproof. However, for usage detection within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair acts as a record keeper for prolonged substance use by securing biomarkers within the strands. When taken from near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to about three months for drugs and alcohol. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-proof, and convenient for shipping.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) from the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a sample weighing 150mg is suggested. Using a jeweler's scale is advised for specimen weighing. If scalp hair is not available, a corresponding amount of body hair may be used. When discussing head hair, it specifically means scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types, such as facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The drug testing laboratory processing involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial process of incorporating a sample into a laboratory's system. It involves checking if the sample is sealed and transported correctly, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and carrying out any extra data entry that isn't provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid analysis for substance misuse. While it is a cost-effective approach to eliminate drug usage for most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for court acceptance. Any samples identified as presumptively positive in Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

Should a sample prove presumptively positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. In this process, drugs are retrieved from hair at a lower concentration than in alternative methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening particularly challenging to perform.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcomes is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation if necessary. The comprehensive laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which offer a shorter detection span.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is notably challenging, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Provides historical data: Offers a pattern of drug use over time, not limited to recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests are generally pricier than other testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Factors such as hair color and personal hair growth discrepancies can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand itself and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
