Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Wilmington, Massachusetts. Specializing in hair-based drug and alcohol screenings, our facilities span cities nationwide, equipped to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp is needed, though body hair can suffice. Hair testing can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common method for substance detection. Employers, courts, and substance professionals often prefer hair tests over traditional urinalysis. This test is favored by employers with strict drug policies, the legal system, and those on probation. Key advantages of hair follicle testing include a 90-day detection window, observed collection, and low risk of tampering. Yet, for screening recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain most effective.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. When hair is collected close to the scalp, it can indicate substance use history up to roughly a 3-month period. Hair sample collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of about 200 strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp, provides approximately 100mg of hair, the preferred amount for initial screening and verification. For tests such as EtG, add-ons, and those exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for accurate specimen measurement. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent amount of body hair is acceptable. References to head hair specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair areas (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase, where a sample is processed into the laboratory’s documentation system. This process confirms the proper sealing and transportation of the sample, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any needed data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary, efficient check for drug presence. Though Screening is cost-effective for excluding drug use in most samples, a confirmation is necessary for court-admissible evidence. Samples with a presumptive positive in Screening require secondary confirmation.

With a presumptive positive result during Screening, additional hair from the original sample is set aside for Extraction. Drugs are extracted from hair at a lower concentration than other samples like urine or oral fluid, underscoring hair testing’s complexity.

Positive screening confirmations are carried out using techniques such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives undergo washing prior to confirmation if needed. The full laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug testing can trace drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection spans.
  • Low risk of tampering: Cheating on a hair drug test is notably difficult, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Historical usage patterns: Offers insights into drug consumption over time rather than only recent use.

Limitations:

  • No recent use detection: Drugs take around 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Higher expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and unique growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly misnamed as "hair follicle tests", it is the hair strand that undergoes analysis, not the follicle itself under the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Wilmington, MA, excels over urinary analysis in several aspects. These tests are renowned for their superior detection range, capturing a broader timeline of substance use. The limitations of traditional urine tests are surpassed by the reliability of hair samples, offering more trustworthy results without the risk of circumvention by the test taker.

Extended Detection Window

Wilmington, MA, employers benefit greatly from the extended detection window of hair follicle testing. Unlike other methods, this test can track substance use up to 90 days, providing a true reflection of an individual's history. This extended tracking ability grants employers a detailed assessment of substance usage over a prolonged period, invaluable for informed decision making.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
