Accredited Drug Testing provides extensive hair follicle drug assessments in Burlington, Massachusetts. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, Accredited Drug Testing focuses on hair analysis, offering centers in cities across the nation for testing. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is needed from the head, though body hair can be used. Hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific testing options.
Lately, drug testing often involves a hair follicle test method. Hair drug tests replace standard urine tests for many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse specialists, demanding them for their zero-tolerance policies. These tests have the advantage of a lengthy detection period of up to 90 days, conducted under observation, making them difficult to manipulate. However, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain highly accurate.

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective means for uncovering substance and alcohol consumption. Hair strands offer an extended record of alcohol and drug presence by securing biomarkers within the hair fiber. When obtained near the scalp, hair can furnish roughly a 3-month detection range for substances and alcohol. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively tamper-resistant, and simple to transport.
A 1.5-inch section of nearly 200 hair strands (approximately matching a #2 pencil in volume) nearest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for testing and verifying. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or analyses beyond a 10-panel, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's suggested to weigh the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a comparable quantity of body hair can be collected. When highlighting head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).
Process Overview
The primary phases in the lab processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.
Accessioning includes the preliminary management of a sample into a lab’s system. This entails verifying that the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any supplementary data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.
Screening represents an initial rapid assessment for abuse drugs. Although Screening is a budget-friendly strategy to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be valid in court. Any samples presumptively positive in Screening necessitate a secondary verification.
When a sample is presumptively positive in the Screening phase, more hair is taken from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a lower concentration compared to other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening one of the most challenging methodologies to conduct.
Confirmation of any positive screening result is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumptively positive are cleansed before confirmation if required. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation under ISO / IEC 17025 standards.
