Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle analysis for substances in Havre de Grace, Maryland. If a hair drug or alcohol test is necessary, our expertise is in hair analysis, and we have facilities in every city across the country where this test can be conducted. Typically, about 1.5 to 2 inches of scalp or body hair is needed. These tests can check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized to fit specific testing needs.

Recently, the inclusion of hair follicle analysis in drug testing has become more prevalent. Various employers, legal authorities, and addiction specialists now prefer hair testing over the traditional urine method. The use of hair follicle tests is favored by zero-tolerance policy employers, courts, and probation services. A key advantage is the extended detection period, which can span up to 90 days, ensuring a tamper-proof collection process. Meanwhile, for most accurate recent drug use detection (within the past 5 days), urine tests remain preferred.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective technique for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term history of alcohol and drugs by trapping biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When gathered close to the scalp, hair can offer up to a 3-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the ideal sample for testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is recommended. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair could be gathered. When mentioning head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair denotes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The process in a lab for analyzing a drug test result is composed of Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial intake of a sample into the lab’s system. This involves confirming that the sample was sealed correctly and shipped adequately, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and adding any additional data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a cost-effective method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be admissible in legal settings. Any samples presumptively positive in Screening need a secondary verification.

If a sample is presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and prepped for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methodologies (ex. urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the hardest methodology to perform.

Confirmation of any positive Screening result is done via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed prior to confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can detect drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection span.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is quite hard, making outcomes more accurate.
  • Supplies historical insights: It can show a pattern of drug consumption over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent consumption: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to be noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual variations in hair growth can alter the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: While frequently referred to as "hair follicle tests," the test examines the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
