For those in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, we excel in hair testing and have numerous centers across the nation to facilitate this service. Generally, hair from the crown or body ranging from 1.5 to 2 inches is required. Hair tests can be customized to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specified testing needs.
Recently, the adoption of hair follicle drug tests in drug screening has risen significantly. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now often prefer hair drug tests over standard urine tests. This method appeals particularly to employers with rigid drug-free mandates, courts, and those monitoring probation. Hair analysis has emerged as a significant instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the strands, hair offers a prolonged record of alcohol and drug presence throughout its growth. When obtained near the scalp, hair can reveal a drug usage history of up to approximately three months for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.
A 1.5-inch segment comprising roughly 200 hairs (comparable to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for analysis and verification. For EtG, supplementary tests, and tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair refers to all other types of hair (e.g., facial, axillary).
Procedure Summary
The primary phases in analyzing a drug test in a lab include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.
Accessioning entails the initial processing of a sample within a laboratory’s framework. This covers ensuring that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any data entry not covered by an electronic custody chain.
Screening offers an initial rapid assessment for drug misuse. While Screening is an economical method to exclude drug use in most specimens, a screen indicating positive requires validation to be court-admissible. Any samples that are presumptively positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.
If a specimen is indicated as presumptively positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample, readying it for Extraction. Drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than with other methodologies (such as urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is notably challenging.
Verification of any positive screening result is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples flagged as presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation as required. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning through to Confirmation is rigorously evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair category and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.
