Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Friendship Heights Village, Maryland. If you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing is unrivaled, with testing centers available in every city nationwide. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is necessary. We provide analyses for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specialized hair testing services.

Lately, drug testing methods lean more towards the hair follicle drug test option. Various employers, judiciary systems, and Substance Abuse experts now opt for hair drug tests over the conventional urine tests. These tests are critical for employers enforcing zero-tolerance policies on drugs, the judiciary, and individuals under probation. The main advantage of hair follicle drug tests is the extended detection window, offering insights into drug use for up to 90 days. With an observed collection process, cheating is nearly impossible. Nevertheless, for drug use detection within the past five days, urine tests remain the most accurate option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a robust technique for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a detailed record of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers within its fibers. When collected close to the scalp, hair can reveal a detection timeframe of up to 3 months for alcohol and other drugs. Gathering the sample is straightforward, it’s fairly resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch lock of around 200 hair strands (roughly akin to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp delivers 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or examinations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample weight is recommended. If scalp hair isn’t accessible, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. References to head hair indicate only scalp hair. Body hair refers to any other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial processing of the sample into a laboratory's system. This step encompasses verifying proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial check for abused drugs. Although Screening offers a cost-effective approach for ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation for admissibility in court. Any samples with a presumptive positive result during Screening must undergo a secondary validation.

Should a specimen be presumptively positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is obtained from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at a much lower concentration level than with other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening poses the greatest methodological challenge.

Confirmation for any positive screen outcome is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Every presumptive positive sample is cleansed as required before confirmation. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a reduced detection duration.
  • Hard to manipulate: Manipulating a hair drug test is quite challenging, thus yielding more reliable outcomes.
  • Delivers historical insight: It offers a timeline of drug consumption over a specified period, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It usually takes around 5-7 days for drugs to be perceptible in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests often come at a higher cost than other drug testing methodologies.
  • Result variances: Variables like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the actual test examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Friendship Heights Village, MD, hair follicle testing surpasses urine testing as it boasts superior detection accuracy and reliability. Where urine testing offers a limited window of drug detection, hair testing reveals a person’s drug history over a much broader timeframe, ensuring employers can maintain a substance-free workplace.

Traditional urine tests are often susceptible to tampering, whereas hair follicle tests provide nearly fail-proof results. The choice of hair testing highlights its unparalleled ability to trace substance use history accurately and reliably, leaving minimal room for manipulation.

Extended Detection Window

Friendship Heights Village, MD, recognizes hair follicle testing for its extended detection window—up to 90 days. This offers employers an in-depth perspective of an individual’s substance use history, far surpassing traditional methods that cover a much shorter period.

Employers benefit from a broader detection timeframe, offering a comprehensive understanding of an individual's long-term drug use. Such evaluations ensure informed hiring and retention decisions, supporting a safe, drug-free workplace environment.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Friendship Heights Village, MD, hair follicle tests are recognized for their tamper-resistant nature, highlighting their credibility. The risk of sample adulteration is largely diminished with hair testing, resulting in reliable data.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
