For comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Fulton, Kentucky, turn to Accredited Drug Testing. Specializing in hair and alcohol testing, our centers nationwide can conduct these tests. Typically, hair samples need to be 1.5 to 2 inches long, from the scalp or body. Options include drug, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized hair tests.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a common method for drug screening. More employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts are favoring hair tests over urine ones. These tests benefit zero-tolerance employers, the courts, and those on probation, offering a detection window up to 90 days. Although difficult to falsify, for recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine testing remains most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a robust method for detecting drug and alcohol usage. Hair strands capture a long-term record of alcohol and drug presence by locking biomarkers within their growing fibers. When gathered close to the scalp, hair offers a detection window of up to roughly 3 months for drugs and alcohol. This method is easy to collect, offers high resistance to tampering, and is straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of about 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the ideal amount for detailed screening and confirmation. For EtG, specified add-ons, and evaluations exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair isn’t available, an equivalent quantity of body hair is acceptable. The term "head hair" specifically denotes scalp hair. "Body hair" includes all other hair variations (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug test result processing in a lab encompasses four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial incorporation of a sample into a lab’s system. It includes verifying proper sealing and shipping of the sample, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid check for drugs of abuse. Although it is a cost-effective means of ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive result from Screening necessitates confirmation to be legally permissible. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening require further confirmation.

For samples that test presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Preparation for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are isolated at lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcome is performed using techniques such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples undergo washing as needed. The complete process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the guidance of both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a more limited detection period.
  • Resistance to cheating: It is extremely challenging to falsify a hair drug test, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Insight into historical patterns: Hair tests provide a timeline of drug use over an extended period, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs need approximately 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Cost implication: Hair drug tests are typically costlier compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the presence of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although commonly known as "hair follicle tests", the procedure examines the hair strand instead of the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
