Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Milford, Kansas. Whether you require a drug or alcohol hair test, our expertise in hair testing is unparalleled, with centers across all cities Nationwide for performing these tests. Typically, a length of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is needed. The analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other tailored hair testing solutions.

Hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become a popular method for drug detection. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts often opt for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. This method suits employers with strict anti-drug policies, court mandates, and those on probation. Hair follicle tests are favored for their extended detection of drug usage, reaching up to 90 days, using an observed collection process that is hard to manipulate. Although, for detecting drug use in the previous 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as a robust method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. The hair strand’s fibers capture biomarkers of alcohol and other substances, providing a historical record of up to approximately three months when cut close to the scalp. Hair collection is straightforward, moderately tamper-resistant, and simple to transport.

By collecting a 1.5-inch section of around 200 hair strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp, you obtain 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation tests. For testing like EtG, additional components, or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing is recommended. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be utilized. References to head hair specifically mean scalp hair, while body hair includes all other types like facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory drug test comprises four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample undergoes preliminary processing as it enters the lab's system. This step verifies the sample’s secure sealing and shipping, assigns a distinct LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any remaining data input not supplied by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening performs an initial, rapid check for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is cost-efficient for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be legally valid. Samples that show a presumptive positive in Screening require further verification.

A sample indicating a presumptive positive in Screening proceeds to Extraction by taking additional hair from the initial collection. Drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluids), which makes hair drug testing the most challenging to conduct.

Confirmation for any positive screen is done with GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. Throughout Accessioning to Confirmation, the entire laboratory workflow is inspected under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use up to 90 days prior, whereas urine tests have a briefer detection window.
  • Resistance to cheating: Cheating on a hair drug test is very difficult, which enhances result accuracy.
  • Historial usage data: It can illustrate a longer pattern of drug use over time rather than indicating only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Price: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Individual differences in hair growth and hair color can influence the levels of drug metabolites found in hair.

Note: While commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
