Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations in Abilene, Kansas. Need a hair drug or alcohol exam? We focus on hair screening with centers across all U.S. cities prepared for testing. Generally, a hair length of 1.5-2 inches from the head or body is used. Hair assessments can check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or custom testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common method in substance screening. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probationers often use hair follicle tests. The chief advantage is a longer detection period, typically up to 90 days, collected under observation, making cheating nearly impossible. However, for detection within the past five days, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands capture biomarkers within their fibers, offering a prolonged history of substance use. When cut near the scalp, hair can indicate drug and alcohol use within roughly a 3-month period. It is easy to collect, challenging to alter, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of around 200 hair strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg, which is the preferred amount for analysis and verification. For EtG testing or panels above 10, 150mg of hair is advised. Using a jeweler's scale can help ensure the correct weight. If scalp hair is not available, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. Scalp hair specifically refers to head hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result includes four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to introducing a sample into the lab's system. This process confirms that the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any missing information not covered by the electronic custody documentation system.

Screening serves as a preliminary evaluation for drug substances. Though it is an economical way to eliminate potential drug use in most samples, any positive result during Screening must undergo confirmation to be legally valid. Presumptive positives in Screening demand additional verification.

Should a sample test positive during Screening, further hair from the initial specimen is prepped for Extraction. This step involves isolating drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other testing techniques (like urine or saliva), thus making hair drug screening notably challenging.

Positive results from Screening are verified using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any samples marked as presumptive positives are cleaned before confirmation as required. The complete laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited according to both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair specifications and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection period: Hair tests can reveal drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to tamper with: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, leading to more accurate findings.
  • Offers past usage data: It tracks drug consumption patterns over time, as opposed to just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Does not detect recent consumption: Drugs become traceable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests cost more than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual growth differences can alter drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: While commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
