Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Stennett, Iowa. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair testing, with test centers available nationwide to carry out these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required. Our hair tests cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized testing options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common method for drug screening. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts are increasingly opting for hair drug tests over standard urine tests. Hair follicle tests are favored by employers with drug-free policies, courts, and probationary bodies. A key advantage is their extended drug detection window of approximately 90 days, ensuring a monitored collection process and being nearly impossible to tamper with, though for assessing recent drug use in the last 5 days, urine tests remain most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. Collected near the scalp, hair can provide a detection window of up to 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of roughly 200 strands of hair (about the size of a #2 pencil) near the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional substances, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen’s weight. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, we are specifically referring to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other forms of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four fundamental steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory system. This process involves confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not encompassed by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening represents an initial rapid assessment for drug abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be valid in legal settings. Presumed positive Screening results must undergo a secondary confirmation.

For samples that screen positive, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. During this step, drugs are isolated from hair at concentrations much lower than in methods like urine or oral fluid, making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology.

Positive screening results are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumed positive samples undergo necessary washing before confirmation. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, complies with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to deceive: Hair drug tests are difficult to manipulate, leading to more reliable results.
  • Supplies historical insight: It offers a drug use pattern over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs typically become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be costlier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variation: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth differences may impact the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis is conducted on the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
