Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug tests available in Lewis, Iowa. For those requiring drug or alcohol analysis through hair samples, we offer expert services across all cities nationwide. Typically, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, either from the scalp or the body. Our tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or cater to specific hair testing needs.

Recently, drug testing has increasingly relied on hair follicle methods. A growing number of employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer hair tests over traditional urine analyses. Employers with strict drug-free mandates, judicial bodies, and individuals on probation have adopted this method. Hair testing's advantage lies in its extended detection period, which spans about 90 days, ensuring authenticity and difficulty in falsification. Nonetheless, for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective mechanism for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair serves as a long-term timeline for the use of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within its fiber matrix. When hair is gathered near the scalp, it can offer a detection range of up to roughly three months for both alcohol and drugs. It is straightforward to collect, somewhat secure from tampering, and convenient to transport.

A sample size of 1.5 inches with about 200 hair strands (roughly equivalent to a #2 pencil) taken nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and testing that involves more than 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. We advise using a jeweler's scale to weigh the sample. In instances where scalp hair isn't accessible, a comparable quantity of body hair may be collected. The term head hair solely pertains to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Overview of the Process

The primary steps in laboratory processing of a drug testing result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning comprises the preliminary processing of a sample into the laboratory's system. This stage ensures that the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for abuse drugs. While it is a cost-effective approach to exclude drug use in the majority of samples, a positive screen needs to be substantiated to hold up in court. Samples marking a presumptive positive at this stage require subsequent confirmation.

When a sample is deemed presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is retrieved from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are retrieved from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methodologies (such as urine or oral fluid), underscoring why hair drug testing is the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is carried out through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results undergo a wash before confirmation, if necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and it adheres to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of Hair Drug Testing:

  • Extended detection capability: Hair drug testing can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which provide a shorter detection period.
  • Resistance to tampering: Hair drug tests are very hard to cheat on, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Reflective historical information: They offer a timeline of drug use over months, not just recent use.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It generally takes 5-7 days for drugs to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to cost more than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and variations in personal hair growth can influence the level of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Despite being colloquially termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis targets the hair strand itself, not the follicle below the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Lewis, IA offers distinct advantages over traditional urine analyses. Hair tests surpass in detection accuracy and are challenging to deceive. Unlike urine, hair tests monitor drug usage over prolonged periods, capturing a broader history. This comprehensive view is invaluable for employers maintaining strict drug-free policies.

By choosing hair testing over urine, businesses and legal bodies can ensure a more reliable assessment of drug use history. This advanced method elevates detection standards, providing accuracy and reliability unmatched by traditional urine tests.

Extended Detection Window

In Lewis, IA, hair follicle drug testing provides an extensive detection timeline that greatly surpasses other testing options. With a window of up to 90 days, it enables employers to gain a more holistic understanding of an individual’s drug use history, making it a superior choice.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
