Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Orange City, Iowa. If you're in need of drug or alcohol testing, we are experts in hair tests, with testing centers in cities across the country capable of performing these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head or body is required. Hair analyses can check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other bespoke testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become more common in drug testing practices. Many workplaces, legal systems, and addiction specialists now prefer hair over urine tests. Hair follicle tests are favored by zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probation officers. Their main advantage is a longer detection window, up to 90 days, with a supervised collection process, making them hard to tamper with. Yet, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the best option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a lengthy record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers in the strands' fibers as they grow. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol usage for up to around 90 days. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A segment of hair measuring 1.5 inches and consisting of roughly 200 strands (approximately as thick as a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp provides 100mg, the optimum quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or assessments beyond 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advisable. It is recommended that the sample be weighed on a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be taken. When mentioning head hair, only scalp hair is implied. Body hair encompasses all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary stages in the lab processing of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step where a sample is entered into a lab's system. This step ensures the sample was properly sealed and sent, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and includes any extra data entry absent in an electronic custody chain system.

Screening serves to quickly identify potential drug misuse. Though Screening offers a cost-efficient means to eliminate drug use in most cases, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be legally valid. Samples that are tentatively positive in Screening must undergo further confirmation.

Should a sample prove tentatively positive during Screening, additional hair is separated from the original and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair in much lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), making hair drug testing the most complex method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcome is accomplished via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All tentatively positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The complete lab procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes scrutiny under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which detect usage for shorter periods.
  • Hard to tamper with: Cheating a hair drug test is quite difficult, resulting in more precise outcomes.
  • Shows historical patterns: It reveals drug usage trends over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can alter drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite being commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Orange City, IA, hair follicle testing is deemed superior to urine tests. The accuracy of hair testing makes it more reliable, as it can detect drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine's shorter window. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
