Located in Willowbrook, Illinois, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, we specialize in hair testing and operate testing centers across all U.S. cities for your convenience. Typically, hair measuring 1.5 to 2 inches from your head or body can be used. Our analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other personalized hair testing solutions.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly included hair follicle tests. Many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals now favor hair tests over standard urine tests. Used by employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and those on probation, the main advantage of hair follicle tests is their longer detection window of up to 90 days. They are collected under observation and are extremely difficult to manipulate. For detecting drug use within the past 5 days, however, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a formidable technique for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged history of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the maturing hair strand. When obtained near the scalp, hair offers a detection period for alcohol and drugs extending up to approximately 90 days. Collection is straightforward, alteration is quite challenging, and transport is uncomplicated.

A 1.5-inch sample of roughly 200 strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's thickness) nearest the scalp yields 100mg, which is the preferred quantity for effective screening and verification. For EtG, additional panels, and/or panels exceeding 10, it's advised to use 150mg. Using a jeweler's scale for measurement is suggested. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be taken. By head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses alternative hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory handling of a drug test comprises four core stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning concerns the initial integration of a sample into a lab's framework. This encompasses affirming proper sealing and shipment of the sample, allotting a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and executing any extra data entries omitted by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening administers a preliminary and rapid drug misuse check. Though Screening is an economical approach to eliminate drug usage in a majority of samples, a positive outcome mandates validation to be court-acceptable. Every sample that is tentatively positive in Screening necessitates further confirmation.

If a sample appears presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for Extraction. Here, drugs are derived from hair at notably lower concentrations than alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening the most complex methodology.

Confirmation of any positive results from screening is achieved via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples showing tentative positives are cleansed before confirmation, as necessary. The comprehensive lab procedure from Accessioning through Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair specification and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify substance use for up to three months, while urine tests offer a shorter detection span.
  • Fraud resistance: Hair drug tests are extremely resistant to manipulation, enhancing the reliability of the results.
  • Reveal usage history: These tests can outline a trend of substance use over an interval, beyond recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify immediate use: Detecting drugs in hair takes about 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests cost more than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly dubbed "hair follicle tests", the procedure examines the hair strand, excluding the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
