Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Chicago Heights, Illinois. If you require drug or alcohol detection through hair samples, our expertise at Accredited Drug Testing ensures that we are equipped with centers for testing across all cities nationwide. Typically, about 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, preferably from the crown or body, can be analyzed. Hair tests offer results for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other custom options.

Recently, there has been a shift towards conducting drug tests using hair follicles. Various employers, judiciary bodies, and substance abuse professionals favor hair tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are ideal for organizations enforcing strict anti-drug policies and also for probationary purposes. Hair follicle tests offer an extended drug detection window of up to 90 days, with samples collected under supervision, making them resistant to tampering. However, for detection of recent use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain more effective.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a repository for biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows, offering a long-term record of alcohol and drug use. When taken from near the scalp, hair can reveal drug use over a span of up to three months. Collecting hair is straightforward, resisting tampering, and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) taken closest to the scalp, will provide 100mg, which is the ideal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. It is advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is lacking, an equivalent amount of body hair can be gathered. When referring to head hair, it pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result follows four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails initially entering a sample into the laboratory's system. It includes confirming the proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any required data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary assessment for drugs of misuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective approach to dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive screening requires confirmation to be legally acceptable. Any samples that yield a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair from the initial specimen undergoes preparation for Extraction. This step involves extracting drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), marking hair drug testing as the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening finding is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing as required before confirmation. The comprehensive laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adherence to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can uncover drug use for as long as 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a shorter detection window.
  • Resistance to manipulation: It is exceedingly challenging to deceive a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It depicts a pattern of drug use over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: It requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Costliness: Hair drug tests generally incur higher expenses compared to alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variance: Factors such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the levels of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although commonly termed as "hair follicle tests," the analysis is performed on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why does hair follicle testing surpass urine testing in Chicago Heights, IL? One significant advantage is its superior detection accuracy. Hair tests offer a broader detection window, making it harder for individuals to mask past drug use. Unlike urine tests, which are limited in scope, hair specimens can highlight patterns of use over extended periods, offering unparalleled reliability.

Moreover, the robustness of hair testing offers employers security against potential false results. With its rigorous testing parameters, hair specimens provide conclusive results difficult to refute. This level of precision positions hair tests as more reliable than traditional urine testing methods.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window offered by hair follicle tests in Chicago Heights, IL, is a game-changer. These tests can detect drug use over a period as long as 90 days. For employers, this means gaining a deeper insight into an individual’s substance use history, offering a thorough evaluation of behavior and habits.

With hair testing, organizations can move beyond the short timeframe limitations of other methods. The extended window allows for a comprehensive review, reflecting consistent patterns of use. This aids decision-makers in ensuring the integrity of their workforce by having a clear picture of applicant and employee history.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Chicago Heights, IL, the hair follicle testing method reduces the risk of sample tampering significantly. Unlike urine tests, which are subject to adulteration, hair tests provide a level of integrity that's hard to compromise. The collection process is overseen carefully, contributing to the credibility and reliability of the results.

Hair tests' resistance to tampering not only enhances confidence in their findings but also ensures that the results are an accurate reflection of the individual's substance use. This formidable barrier against manipulation safeguards the testing process from fraudulent activity.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
