In Roberts, Illinois, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. If you require a hair drug or alcohol screening, our expertise lies in hair testing with facilities across the nation, capable of administering these tests. A hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the head or body is generally needed. Hair tests are versatile, checking for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have gained popularity as a drug testing method. Various employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists favor hair tests instead of conventional urine tests. This testing method benefits zero-tolerance employers, the judiciary, and those on probation due to its extended detection window that covers up to 90 days, being collected under observation and is extremely hard to manipulate. Nevertheless, for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days, the urine test remains superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When obtained near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a roughly 3-month detection span for alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of about 200 hairs (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimum amount for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or analyses above 10 panels, 150mg of the hair specimen is advised. We advise weighing the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If head hair cannot be used, a similar quantity of body hair may be gathered. Head hair refers solely to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary stages in the lab handling of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the initial handling of a sample within a laboratory’s framework. This step ensures the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplementary data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be valid in court. Any samples with presumptive positives during Screening need further confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a much lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is done through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is overseen under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a narrower detection timeframe.
  • Hard to deceive: It is extremely challenging to falsify a hair drug test, thus ensuring more precise results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can illustrate a sequence of drug use over time, beyond merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to show in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other drug analysis methods.
  • Result discrepancies: Factors such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although usually called "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand rather than the follicle under the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing surpasses urine tests in Roberts, IL by offering superior detection capabilities. Unlike traditional urine tests, hair testing provides a broader and more detailed analysis of substance use, reducing the chances of false negatives and improving reliability.

Employers prefer hair tests over urine due to their ability to detect drug use over a more extended period, up to 90 days. This comprehensive detection window enhances the ability to enforce zero-tolerance policies effectively and ensures a safe working environment.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing offers an extended detection window of up to 90 days in Roberts, IL, providing a detailed view of substance use history. This extended period means employers can gain comprehensive insights into an individual's drug use, aiding in informed decision-making and policy enforcement.

The longevity of detection offered by hair testing outshines other methods, making it a valuable tool for employers assessing an applicant's or employee's long-term substance use. This allows for a more robust profiling of individuals compared to shorter-term testing options.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
