Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Chatsworth, Illinois. If seeking a hair test for drugs or alcohol, our expert services include hair testing, with centers across all cities nationwide to conduct these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is required for testing. We offer analyses for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a preferred method for drug screening. Numerous employers, courts, and Substance Abuse specialists opt for hair tests over standard urine tests. These tests serve employers enforcing strict drug policies, courts, and probation cases. Hair follicle tests offer a longer detection window of up to 90 days, utilizing observed collection, and are nearly impossible to deceive. Nevertheless, for recent use in the last five days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for identifying substance use, including drugs and alcohol. It offers an extended historical record by capturing biomarkers within the hair's structural fibers as it grows. When sourced directly from the scalp, hair can reveal substance use for a period of up to about three months. Collecting hair is straightforward, it is relatively resistant to tampering, and it can be transported with ease.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, approximately equivalent to 200 strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil), nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation procedures. For EtG, additional tests, and tests exceeding 10 panels, a quantity of 150mg is suggested. It is advisable to verify the specimen's weight using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a comparable volume of body hair can be used. In the context of head hair, only scalp hair is referred to. "Body hair" includes any other types (such as facial or axillary).

Process Overview

The process in a laboratory for determining drug test results involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first step in which a sample is incorporated into the laboratory system. This process verifies that the sample has been properly sealed and shipped, assigns it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplementary data entry not included in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts an initial, swift assessment for drugs of abuse. This phase is a cost-efficient approach to initially exclude drug usage in the majority of samples. However, a positive result in Screening requires confirmation for it to be valid in legal settings. Samples with presumptive positives in Screening must undergo further verification.

Should a sample test positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction stage. In Extraction, drugs are retrieved from hair in considerably lower concentrations than in other methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening particularly challenging.

Confirmation of a positive Screening result utilizes GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptively positive samples are washed when necessary before confirmation. The entire laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes quality checks under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and aligns with ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Able to indicate drug use up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a narrower window.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair test is extremely challenging, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Chronological data: Provides an insight into long-term substance use trends instead of just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to identify recent use: Detection in hair requires roughly 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Higher cost: Generally more costly compared to other methods of drug testing.
  • Result variability: Influences like hair color and personal hair growth differences can alter drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although termed "hair follicle tests", these tests examine the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
