Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug analyses in Evanston, Illinois. Should you require a test for drugs or alcohol, our expertise lies in hair testing, available in centers across the nation. Generally, having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body is necessary. Hair samples can be evaluated for drug use, alcohol/ETG, or customized testing options.

Over the years, drug testing has increasingly incorporated the hair follicle method. Employers, judiciary, and Substance Abuse professionals now prefer hair testing rather than traditional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests benefit those enforcing zero-tolerance policies as they detect drug usage over 90 days, are conducted under observation, and are mostly tamper-proof. Nonetheless, urine tests remain optimal for detecting recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is widely regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a lengthy history of alcohol and drugs by sealing biomarkers in the fibers of the emerging hair strand. When taken from near the scalp, hair offers up to roughly a 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and other substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hairs (equivalent to the size of a #2 pencil) next to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or those exceeding 10 panels, it is advised to gather 150mg of the sample. It is recommended to measure the sample on a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, an equal volume of body hair can be used. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair. Body hair covers all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The principal steps in the laboratory assessment of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial handling of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This process includes verifying proper sealing and shipment of the sample, allocation of a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid test for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive result necessitates validation to be allowable in court. Samples that yield a presumptive positive in Screening require secondary confirmation.

In cases where a sample shows a presumptive positive at the Screening stage, more hair is drawn from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. During this step, drugs are removed from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), thus making hair drug testing the most intricate procedure to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples showing presumptive positive results are cleansed before confirmation as required. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter time frame.
  • Challenging to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely tough, thereby enhancing result accuracy.
  • Yields historical data: It can determine a pattern of drug usage over time, not just immediate usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It generally takes around 5-7 days for drugs to be discernible in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although frequently called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Evanston, IL centers on superior detection accuracy and reliability. Hair tests present a broader detection timeframe compared to urine tests which are effective primarily in detecting recent drug use. Moreover, hair follicle testing minimizes the risk of false negatives, granting more confidence in the results.

Through hair analysis, substances are detectable long after consumption, whereas urine tests miss past instances if the system has cleared them. This makes hair testing an ideal choice for thorough screening, particularly where substance abuse policies are stringent.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Evanston, IL offers an Extended Detection Window of drug use, reaching up to 90 days past usage. This extensive detection period provides employers with detailed insights into an employee's or candidate's substance history, aiding in making informed decisions.

This capability ensures that individuals cannot easily mask substance use habits, unlike shorter-window tests. Employers value this for its ability to better assess long-term substance use patterns, offering a comprehensive understanding of their workforce.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

The hair follicle test in Evanston, IL is valued for its Tamper-Resistant Testing Method. It significantly reduces the chances of sample adulteration, offering trustworthy results. Such resilience in testing ensures the integrity of the collected samples, making it a robust choice for accurate drug detection.

Unlike other methods vulnerable to manipulation, hair testing provides definitive proof of substance use that withstands legal scrutiny. This reliability reassures those implementing drug policies of the authenticity of the test outcomes.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
