Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Glenview, IL. Whether you're in need of a hair or alcohol drug test, we specialize in these assessments and maintain testing centers nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body are needed. Our hair tests offer options for drug, alcohol/ETG analysis or other customized examinations.

Recently, the hair follicle test has become a more common method for drug detection, surpassing traditional urine tests. Courts, employers, and substance abuse experts are increasingly favoring hair drug tests due to zero-tolerance policies. The key advantage of hair tests is their prolonged detection window, lasting up to 90 days. Despite this, urine tests remain the most accurate for recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. It offers a historical record by capturing biomarkers within the strands as they grow. Close-to-scalp samples allow for a detection period of up to roughly three months for substances like alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, adulteration is challenging, and shipping is hassle-free.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields about 100mg, which is ideal for testing and validation. For EtG, additional testing, and tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advisable. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weight verification is suggested. If scalp hair isn't accessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. Our reference to head hair is specifically about scalp hair, while body hair includes other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The process in a laboratory for drug test results consists of Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning handles the initial intake of a sample into the lab system, ensuring the sample’s seal and shipment were correct, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is the preliminary assessment for potential substance use. While cost-effective for dismissing drug use in most samples, a positive screen must undergo confirmation to be legally acceptable. Any sample suspected to be positive during Screening must go through secondary validation.

If Screening results are presumptive positive, additional hair is used from the original sample for Extraction. This process extracts substances at lower concentrations compared to methods like urine or oral fluid testing, making hair analysis one of the most challenging to conduct.

Positive screening confirmations use GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS technologies. Prior to Confirmation, all samples flagged as positive are cleaned as necessary. The process, from Accessioning through Confirmation, adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Benefits of hair drug analysis:

  • Extended detection period: Hair analysis can identify drug use up to 90 days back, unlike urine tests which cover shorter periods.
  • Resistance to tampering: It's nearly impossible to alter the outcome of a hair test, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Chronological data: It can indicate a timeline of substance use, not just recent activity.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to identify recent ingestion: Detectability in hair starts approximately 5-7 days post usage.
  • Expense: Hair testing is often pricier compared to alternative methods.
  • Result variability: Differences in hair color and individual growth rates can influence metabolite concentrations.

Note: Despite common terminology as "hair follicle tests", these tests actually assess the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
