Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug analyses in DeKalb, Illinois. If a hair drug or alcohol screening is your requirement, our expertise is hair testing, and we operate centers across all cities Nationwide. For testing, the crown or body hair of 1.5 to 2 inches length is generally needed. Hair tests facilitate detection of drugs, alcohol/ETG, among other tailored hair testing services.

The hair follicle drug test method has increasingly gained favor for drug testing more recently. Countless employers, judiciary systems, and Substance Abuse experts are now opting for hair drug tests over traditional urine examinations. Those with strict drug policies, court orders, and probation mandates prefer hair follicle testing for its longer detection timeframe, up to 90 days, its secure collection process, and its near cheat-proof nature. While urine tests remain best for identifying recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Seen as a potent method, hair testing aids in identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of substances by embedding biomarkers inside the developing hair's strands. When acquired near the scalp, it unveils a detection span of up to about three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and conveniently transportable.

Securing a 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's width) closest to the scalp amounts to 100mg of hair—the perfect sample size for preliminary and confirmatory tests. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, 150mg is advisable. Using a jeweler's scale to weigh the specimen is recommended. If scalp hair is missing, a comparable quantity of body hair is acceptable. Here, head hair is strictly scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial and axillary).

Process Overview

Laboratory drug test processing involves four core stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning initiates the sample's entry into a lab's system; it ensures the sample's seal and proper shipping, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performs any extra data entry absent from a digital chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial, swift evaluation for substances of misuse. Though cost-effective in excluding drug use in most samples, a positive screen necessitates subsequent confirmation for legal acceptance. Samples showing presumptive positive results during Screening require follow-up affirmation.

For a presumptively positive sample in Screening, additional hair is retrieved for Extraction. In this step, drugs are drawn from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to different techniques (like urine or saliva testing), rendering hair drug analysis a more challenging procedure.

Any positive Screening result undergoes Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS, with all presumptive positives being washed before Confirmation as needed. The entire laboratory procedure, from Accessioning through Confirmation, is scrutinized following CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designations and conformity with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests detect drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter windows.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Manipulating hair tests is very difficult, translating to more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insight: Unlike recent use, it reveals long-term drug use patterns over time.

Limitations:

  • Lacks detection of recent use: Detecting drugs in hair generally requires 5-7 days.
  • Higher cost: Hair tests are often pricier compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Individual hair growth differences and hair color may influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although frequently called "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in DeKalb, IL Hair follicle testing provides a distinct advantage over urine testing through its superior detection window for substances. Unlike urine tests which reveal recent use, hair tests uncover drug history over months, providing a robust insight into an individual's behavior. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
