Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Darien, Illinois. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is a leader in hair testing, with facilities nationwide that are equipped to conduct these tests. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is typically necessary. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a more prevalent method for drug screening. Numerous employers, legal institutions, and Substance Abuse professionals favor hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests appeal to employers enforcing strict no-drug policies, judiciary systems, and individuals under probation. A key advantage is the extended detection window of up to 90 days, with the sample collected under supervision, making tampering nearly impossible. For detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the preferred choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of substance use by preserving biomarkers in the strands of developing hair. When taken near the scalp, it offers approximately a 3-month time frame for detecting drugs and alcohol. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment containing around 200 hair strands (roughly the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount needed for testing and verification. For assessments including EtG, additional items, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. It's advisable to measure the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent sample of body hair can be used. When we mention head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair includes any other types of hair (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The lab process for obtaining a drug test result encompasses four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step, processing a sample into the lab’s system. It involves ensuring the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional information entry not included by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial rapid assessment for detecting drug use. Though Screening is cost-effective for ruling out drug usage in most cases, a positive result must be verified for legal proceedings. Any samples that show a preliminary positive result in Screening need a subsequent confirmation.

If a sample shows a preliminary positive during Screening, further hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction process. Here, substances are extracted at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair analysis is notably complex.

Confirmation of any positive screening results is achieved via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples showing a potential positive result are cleaned prior to confirmation as needed. The lab processing from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards certification.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection time frame: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection span.
  • Challenging to manipulate: It is extremely hard to manipulate a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers retrospective data: It outlines a pattern of substance use over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are usually pricier compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests," the analysis targets the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
