Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Bolingbrook, Illinois. For those needing a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing extends across all cities Nationwide, ensuring extensive coverage. Typically, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, either from the crown or body. Our tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored options for accurate results.

In recent years, hair follicle drug tests have become a prevalent method for substance screening. Numerous employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals now prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests cater to workplaces with strict drug-free policies, courts, and probation scenarios. The main advantage is their extended detection window, often up to 90 days, and observed collection process, minimizing tampering. Despite this, urine tests remain superior for detecting recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is regarded as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged record of alcohol and drug usage by capturing biomarkers within the strands' fibers as they grow. With a sample gathered near the scalp, hair can reveal alcohol and drug presence for up to roughly 90 days. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient for shipping.

A 1.5-inch section comprising around 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and verification. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a recommendation of 150mg of the specimen is advised. It is suggested to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a corresponding quantity of body hair can be gathered. When mentioning head hair, it refers exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair denotes all other types (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

There are four primary stages in the lab processing of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial handling of a sample upon entry into the lab's system. This step verifies the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any additional data entry absent from an electronic custody chain.

Screening provides a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Though cost-effective for eliminating drug use in most samples, a positive screen needs verification to hold in court. Any samples testing presumptively positive during Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction preparation. In this phase, drug extraction from hair occurs at significantly lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), establishing hair drug screening as the most challenging methodology.

Confirmation of a positive screening outcome is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positives undergo washing as required. The comprehensive laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes review compliant with both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which display a shorter detection duration.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is notably difficult, ensuring more precise results.
  • Historical insight: Provides a timeline of drug usage, offering more than just recent use data.

Limitations:

  • No detection of recent use: Drugs take roughly 5-7 days to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors including hair color and individual growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
