Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings right in Chatham, Illinois. Whenever a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, Accredited Drug Testing stands as a specialist in this area, featuring centers all over the U.S. capable of conducting hair testing. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your crown or body are needed. Hair testing can check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or alternatively tailored options.

Increasingly, drug testing methods now involve hair follicle analysis. Many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals opt for hair tests over standard urine tests. These tests support employers with zero tolerance on drug use, aid courts, and assist probationers. Key benefits include a detection timeframe that stretches up to 90 days, with observation during sample collection, limiting cheating possibilities. For recent drug use, urine tests within 5 days are still preferred for accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as a significant means for revealing alcohol and drug consumption. Hair strands are a repository for drug and alcohol indicators, captured within their fibers as they grow. When obtained near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol use history for a period of up to three months. The collection of hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and uncomplicated to transport.

To obtain an optimal sample for analysis, collect a 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hairs (roughly the girth of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, yielding 100mg of hair. For EtG enhancements, and/or assessments beyond 10 panels, a sample size of 150mg is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale for measuring the sample is suggested. If scalp hair cannot be collected, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we specifically refer to scalp hair. All other types are classified as body hair (including facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four critical phases in the laboratory assessment of a drug analysis: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning signifies the preliminary treatment of a specimen within the laboratory’s protocol. This process encompasses confirmation of appropriate sealing and dispatch of the sample, generating an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any further information input not encompassed by a digital chain of custody system.

Screening executes an initial expeditious examination for substance use. Although Screening is an economical strategy for ruling out substance utilization across most specimens, a positive outcome requires further authentication for legal acceptability. All samples yielding a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate an additional confirmation.

Should a specimen present a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, substances are retrieved from hair at much lower concentrations compared to alternative approaches (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring the complexity of executing hair drug analysis.

Verification of any positive Screening outcome is accomplished using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS techniques. Every presumptive positive sample undergoes washing before confirmation, if required. The complete laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and adheres to the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug consumption up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection span.
  • Impede falsification: It is arduous to manipulate a hair drug test, thus yielding more reliable results.
  • Yields historical insights: It can illustrate a drug usage trend over time, beyond merely recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: There is an approximate 5-7 day delay before drugs become identifiable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments are generally costlier compared to other drug testing types.
  • Result variability: Aspects such as hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence the concentration of drug residues in the hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand rather than the scalp’s hair follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Across Chatham, IL, hair follicle testing proves superior to traditional urine tests in several aspects.

  • With a longer detection window, it traces substance usage up to 90 days, offering a more thorough examination.
  • Maintaining high reliability, hair tests rarely face manipulation, unlike urine tests, making them a favored choice for many organizations.
The precision of hair testing remains unmatched, guaranteeing accurate results thoroughly.

Extended Detection Window

In Chatham, IL, the extended detection window of hair follicle testing is a standout feature. While urine tests cover recent use, hair tests examine usage up to 90 days prior. This provides employers a broader perspective on an applicant's or employee's substance involvement, assisting in making better hiring or compliance decisions.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
