Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Covington, Georgia. If you require a hair-based drug or alcohol screening, our centers, present in every major city nationwide, offer expertise in hair analysis. Generally, the hair on the crown should measure between 1.5 to 2 inches, though body hair can also be used. Hair tests can be configured to screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing needs.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has gained prominence in the drug screening protocols. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals now prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine analyses. Hair tests serve employers with strict drug-free policies, courts, and probationary individuals. A key advantage of hair tests is their extended detection window, often up to 90 days, and are collected under supervision, making them difficult to adulterate. For detecting recent drug use, within a five-day window, urine tests remain the benchmark.

What it is, How it works

Hair tests have emerged as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a lasting record of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When taken near the scalp, hair samples can reveal drug and alcohol use over a span of nearly 3 months. Hair collection is straightforward, moderately challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) close to the scalp amounts to 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and confirmation. For analyses like EtG amendment and tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest determining the weight of the sample using a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, a similar quantity of body hair might be used. When mentioning head hair, it refers strictly to scalp hair. Body hair comprises all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key procedures in the lab analysis of drug tests include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary processing of a sample within a lab's system. It encompasses checking the sealing and dispatching of the sample, designating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any supplemental data entry that isn't covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening offers an initial quick assessment for substance usage. While Screening is a budget-friendly method to negate drug consumption in most samples, any positive results necessitate confirmation for court acceptability. Samples yielding a presumptive positive in Screening demand further verification.

In instances where a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and set for Extraction. In this process, drugs are retrieved from hair at a lower concentration than in other procedures (like urine or oral fluid), signifying the complexity of hair drug testing.

Verification of any positive screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples indicating presumptive positivity are cleansed before confirmation as required. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection time: Hair drug screenings can trace drug usage for as long as 90 days, contrasting with urine screenings which offer a briefer detection timeframe.
  • Tough to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is notably challenging, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can depict a drug usage pattern over time, not confining to recent instances.

Limitations:

  • Recent use undetectable: It takes roughly 5-7 days for substances to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs than other testing approaches.
  • Result disparities: Hair color and personal differences in hair growth may influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis involves the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
