Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Centralhatchee, Georgia. Should you require a drug or alcohol analysis using hair, our expertise in hair testing is available through centers nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is necessary for testing on the scalp or body. Our tests are capable of detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be tailored for other specific requirements.

Recently, drug testing has increasingly involved hair follicle methods. This approach is favored by many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts over conventional urine tests. For zero-tolerance environments, hair follicle testing offers a detection window of up to 90 days, conducted under observation, making it highly reliable. While for recent usage within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as a potent means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers a comprehensive timeline of substance use by capturing indicators within the strands of developing hair. A sample taken close to the scalp can reveal substance usage within a roughly 3-month timeframe. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient for transport.

For optimal analysis, a 1.5-inch piece of hair, consisting of about 200 strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil), should provide 100mg, the perfect amount for testing. In cases involving EtG, additional assessments, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advisable. We suggest measuring the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is inaccessible, a comparable quantity of body hair is acceptable. When we mention head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair references all other hair sources (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The sequential steps in laboratory evaluation of a drug sample are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first step in integrating a sample into a lab’s database. It ensures the sample was correctly sealed and transported, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any necessary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is an initial assessment to detect possible drug presence. Although Screening economically rules out drug consumption in most cases, a confirmed screen is necessary for legal credibility. Any samples showing potential positivity in Screening need further validation.

Should Screening reveal a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at lower levels than other approaches (e.g., urine or oral fluid), marking hair drug testing as the most complex method to execute.

Certification of a positive screening is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All potentially positive samples are cleansed before confirmation. The full lab progression from Accessioning to Confirmation is monitored under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and meets the ISO / IEC 17025 certification requirements.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair tests reveal drug use within a 90-day window, unlike urine tests with a shorter span.
  • Hard to falsify: Hair tests are difficult to deceive, enhancing the accuracy of outcomes.
  • Shows historical use: They illustrate a timeline of substance use, not just recent activities.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent consumption: Drugs only appear in hair after roughly 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair analysis tends to be costlier than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair pigment and individual growth rates can alter drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite often being termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on hair strands, not the scalp-embedded follicles.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
