Certified Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Okeelanta, Florida. When you require a hair drug or alcohol test, Certified Drug Testing excels in hair analysis. We operate testing centers across all U.S. cities that perform this precise test. About 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head's crown or body is usually necessary. Hair tests analyze substances such as drugs or alcohol/ETG, with custom options available.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly incorporated hair follicle tests. Numerous employers, court systems, and Substance Abuse specialists demand hair drug tests over conventional urine tests. Hair follicle tests suit employers with stringent no-drug policies, judicial systems, and probation individuals. Their main strength lies in detecting drug use over 90 days, collected under observation, making it hard to manipulate. Nevertheless, urine tests remain the most reliable for drug use within past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains long-term indicators of alcohol and other drugs by capturing biomarkers within the hair strand fibers as they grow. When obtained near the scalp, hair samples provide a detection period of up to 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient for transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) taken nearest to the scalp will yield approximately 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional testing, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg is advisable. It is recommended to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent quantity of body hair is acceptable. Head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial handling of a sample within a lab's system, ensuring the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data entry not already accomplished through an electronic chain of custody.

Screening offers a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening efficiently excludes drug usage in most samples, court admissibility requires verification of any positive screen. Presumed positive samples from Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair from the initial sample is prepared for Extraction. In this step, drugs are extracted from the hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), making hair drug testing the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of positive screening outcomes is performed using techniques such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation, if needed. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the complete laboratory processing is reviewed according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection period: Hair tests for drugs can indicate usage up to 90 days prior, unlike urine tests which have more limited detection spans.
  • Hard to deceive: Hair drug tests are challenging to cheat, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers historical insights: They can reveal drug use patterns over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Doesn’t detect recent usage: Drugs are detected in hair about 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests," the test examines the hair strand itself rather than the follicle underneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
