In Montura, Florida, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, our expertise is unmatched, with testing facilities available across all cities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head or body is needed. Our hair tests can assess for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized according to specific requirements.

Hair follicle drug tests have increasingly become the drug testing method of choice in recent years. Employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists now often prefer hair drug tests over standard urine tests. These tests are favored by employers with zero-tolerance policies, judicial systems, and probation requirements, primarily because they provide an extended detection period of up to 90 days, employing an observed collection method that's almost impossible to tamper with. For drug use within the last five days, however, urine tests continue to offer the most precise readings.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective means for discovering drug and alcohol consumption. It offers a comprehensive overview of substance use by embedding biomarkers into the strands of hair as it grows. By collecting hair near the scalp, it can reveal substance use for a duration of up to about three months. Hair is easy to gather, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A sample size of 1.5 inches, containing roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil), collected near the scalp, yields 100mg, which is the ideal sample size for analysis and validation. For tests including EtG, additional panels above 10, or extra features, 150mg of hair is advised. It's best to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If no scalp hair is present, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. "Head hair" specifically indicates scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other hair types (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the process of inputting a specimen into a lab's database, ensuring it's properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data not entered via an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary and swift check for substance misuse. Although Screening is cost-effective for dismissing drug use in most samples, a positive result during screening requires confirmation for legal acceptance. Any samples testing positive in Screening need additional confirmation.

In the case of a positive indication during Screening, more hair from the original sample undergoes preparation for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are obtained from hair at a considerably lower concentration than other techniques (like urine or oral fluid testing), making hair drug analysis notably challenging.

Verification of any positive screening is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All initially positive samples are cleaned before confirmation, if necessary. The entire procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is done under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and in accordance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests have a detection span of up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter windows.
  • Difficult to adulterate: Cheating is highly improbable, ensuring more precise results.
  • Historical consumption data: It displays usage patterns over time rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Not suitable for immediate detection: Drugs become apparent in hair only after 5-7 days.
  • Cost: They tend to be pricier than other testing options.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair pigmentation and individual growth variations may influence metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite the reference term "hair follicle tests," the procedure tests the actual hair strand, not the follicle itself beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Montura, FL, the advantages of hair follicle testing over traditional urine tests are compelling. Hair testing showcases superior detection accuracy, with a longer detection window allowing for a more retrospective view of substance use. It's a robust solution, eliminating the guesswork often associated with urine tests and providing employers with reliable data for informed decision-making.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Montura, FL, offers an extensive detection window, stretching up to 90 days. This prolonged period provides employers with a detailed overview of an individual's substance history, making it a powerful tool for assessing both applicants and current employees. Such a capability ensures comprehensive insights, beyond just immediate substance use.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Montura, FL benefits from hair follicle testing's tamper-resistant nature. This method significantly minimizes the risk of sample manipulation, ensuring that results are trustworthy and credible. The inherent difficulty in adulterating hair samples makes it a preferred choice for maintaining integrity in drug testing processes.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
