Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Merritt Island, FL. As specialists in hair testing, we have nationwide facilities that can conduct these tests efficiently. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body suffices for most analyses. Our tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or cater to other tailored hair testing options.

Recently, the landscape of drug testing has shifted towards hair follicle drug tests more frequently. This method is now favored by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals over the traditional urine tests. Hair drug tests are pivotal for zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probation requirements. Their main benefit is the extended detection window, allowing for up to 90 days, while the observed collection process ensures the test's integrity, making it nearly impossible to deceive. However, for screening drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair serves as a comprehensive log of alcohol and drug traces by securing biomarkers within the hair strand's fibers as it grows. When collected near the scalp, hair can provide up to around a 3-month detection period for alcohol and substances. Hair collection is simple, relatively hard to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch trim of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's diameter) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for tests and validation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests over 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. It is suggested to weigh the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. When discussing head hair, we mean scalp hair solely. Body hair pertains to all other types of hair (facial, armpit, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug testing result consists of four essential steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial handling of a sample within a lab's system. This involves confirming that the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, allocating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any extra data input not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening includes an initial fast assessment for drug abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug consumption in the majority of samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be valid in a legal setting. Any samples identified as potentially positive during Screening require additional confirmation.

If a sample is potentially positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at a considerably lower concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug analysis is the most complex method to conduct.

Confirmation for any positive screening outcome is conducted via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as needed. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is inspected under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the standards accrediting ISO / IEC 17025.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeline: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection timeline.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Hair drug tests are notably hard to manipulate, enhancing accuracy in results.
  • Offers past usage data: It provides a sequence of drug use over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent consumption: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Variabilities in results: Variables like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence the drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the procedure evaluates the hair strand not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why does hair follicle testing surpass urine testing in Merritt Island, FL? The answer lies in its superior detection accuracy and reliability. Hair testing can detect a broader range of substances over a more extended period. In contrast, urine tests may miss recent drug use patterns, making hair testing the more robust choice for comprehensive screening.

Extended Detection Window

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
