Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug examination services in Windsor, Colorado. For those needing hair drug or alcohol testing, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair analysis and maintains testing labs in every city across the United States capable of executing hair tests. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is typically required. Hair samples can be evaluated for drugs, ETG/alcohol, or be tailored for other hair-testing needs.

In recent years, it has become common practice to use hair follicle testing for drug detection. Employers, court systems, and substance abuse professionals increasingly prefer hair drug tests over the conventional urine tests. This type of testing is chosen by zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probation officers. The key advantage of hair follicle testing is its ability to detect drug use over an extended period, up to 90 days, using a monitored collection procedure that is nearly impossible to alter. However, for drug use detection within the last 5 days, urine testing remains the most precise method.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair testing has gained popularity as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged account of alcohol and drug intake by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When taken close to the scalp, it can provide a detection span of up to roughly 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment containing approximately 200 hair strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) from the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG, additional tests, and/or analyses exceeding 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to verify the weight of the specimen. If scalp hair is not an option, a comparable amount of body hair may be used. By head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result consists of four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step where a sample is processed into a lab’s system. This step involves checking that the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody setup.

Screening is a preliminary step to quickly identify drugs of abuse. While it is a cost-effective method to screen out drug usage in most samples, a positive result must be confirmed for legal credibility. Any samples that show a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

If there is a presumptive positive result in the Screening stage, more hair is taken from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are separated from hair in significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is acknowledged as the most complex method to undertake.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are presumptively positive undergo washing as necessary before confirmation. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, while urine tests have a shorter window.
  • Difficulty to cheat: It is nearly impossible to cheat on a hair drug test, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Provides historical data: It reveals a pattern of drug use over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier than other drug testing methodologies.
  • Variations in results: Factors like hair color and personal variations in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the test itself examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
