At Accredited Drug Testing, we provide thorough hair follicle drug screenings in Loveland, Colorado. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, look no further. We have expertise in hair testing with locations across all cities nationwide capable of conducting this type of test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head is required, though body hair may also be used. Our hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and can be customized further.

Recently, the prevalence of hair follicle drug testing has grown. Many employers, legal entities, and substance abuse professionals now prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. This method is favored by employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, judicial systems, and for those on probation, as it offers a detection period of up to 90 days that is notably longer. With an observed collection, it becomes nearly impossible to tamper with, though urine tests remain top choice for identifying recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly viewed as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair can capture a long-term record of substance use by retaining biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When taken close to the scalp, hair has the ability to reveal alcohol and drug use for up to 90 days. Hair is straightforward to collect, challenging to tamper with, and simple to send.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is the ideal sample for screening and verification. For tests such as EtG, add-ons, or panels exceeding 10, a sample weight of 150mg is suggested. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale is recommended for measuring the specimen. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, we are only referring to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning initiates with processing a sample into a lab's system. This process involves confirming the sample was correctly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data tasks not managed by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Despite being a cost-effective measure to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be verified to hold up in legal situations. Any presumptively positive samples in Screening call for a secondary confirmation.

When a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is retrieved from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are separated from hair at a much lower concentration than alternative methods (such as urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug analysis is the most intricate procedure to execute.

Verification of any positive screening outcomes is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning through Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use over a 90-day period, whereas urine tests have a limited detection duration.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is very difficult, enhancing result reliability.
  • Offers historical perspective: Hair drug testing allows for an overview of drug usage patterns over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs may take about 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variances: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: The test commonly termed as "hair follicle tests" actually examines the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
