Located in Estes Park, Colorado, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol examination, these centers specialize in hair assessments, with facilities available nationwide for testing. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body are required. Results can reveal drugs, alcohol (ETG), among other custom testing needs.

Hair follicle testing has become more prevalent in recent times for drug detection. Many organizations, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals now prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Employers enforcing strict drug policies, judicial systems, and probation supervisors rely on hair tests due to their extended detection capability, lasting up to 90 days, and having tamper-proof collection. However, urine tests remain favored for detecting recent drug use, within a 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a formidable means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers an extended chronicle of drug and alcohol intake by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When clipped near the scalp, it provides a detection timeframe of nearly three months for substances. This method of collection is straightforward, fairly tamper-proof, and easy to transport.

A sample comprising 1.5 inches, roughly 200 strands of hair (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp equates to 100mg, the preferred amount for analysis. For EtG, extended panels, or panels exceeding ten tests, a 150mg sample is recommended. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for accurate specimen weight. If scalp hair isn't an option, an equivalent mass of body hair can be gathered. 'Head hair' denotes scalp hair exclusively. 'Body hair' includes all other types like facial and axillary hair.

Synopsis of the Procedure

The procedure has four pivotal phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning initiates the integrating of a sample into the lab framework, ensuring the sample remains sealed during transit, attributing a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any pending data entries absent from electronic custody systems.

Screening acts as a preliminary scan for drug substance misuse. Though cost-efficient for negating drug usage in most specimens, any positive findings require confirmation to achieve legal admissibility. Presumptively positive samples necessitate further confirmation.

Should Screening indicate presumptive positivity, additional hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. At this juncture, drugs undergo extraction from hair at much lesser concentrations than seen in alternatives (such as urine or saliva), rendering hair drug testing the most complex methodology.

Confirmation of positive scans is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positivity undergo requisite cleaning before confirmation. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the entire process is vetted in accordance with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Benefits of Hair Drug Testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, outperforming the shorter range of urine tests.
  • Resistant to manipulation: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Tracks historical usage: Capable of outlining a trend of drug consumption over time, beyond just recent usage.

Drawbacks:

  • Incapable of spotting recent consumption: Drugs become measurable in hair roughly 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Generally costlier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Variables like hair color and personal hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Although commonly labeled as "hair follicle tests", the examination pertains to the hair strand and excludes the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Estes Park, CO

Hair follicle tests offer substantial benefits over traditional urine examinations. Their extended detection time guarantees superior accuracy. Where urine tests detect recent drug usage, hair testing assesses drug consumption over a 90-day period, providing comprehensive insight, making it essential for stringent drug policies.

Employers favor hair tests for their reliability. Unlike urine tests, hair tests minimize chances of tampering, ensuring valid results. This reliability is crucial when maintaining workplace safety and compliance.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in Estes Park, CO

Hair follicle testing offers a significantly longer detection window, reaching up to 90 days. This grants employers a holistic view of a candidate or employee's substance usage history, unlike short-term options such as urine tests. The long detection period aids in assessing an individual’s potential liability or fitness for duty comprehensively.

Organizations can, therefore, make better informed and judicious hiring or retention decisions, supported by the thorough historical insight provided by hair tests.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
