Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Eagle, Colorado. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair testing, boasting testing facilities in all cities across the Nation. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of scalp hair is required, but body hair may also be used. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized hair testing options.

Over recent years, hair follicle drug tests have become more popular for drug screenings. Many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals now prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are used by employers adhering to strict no-drug policies, the judicial system, and probationers. The main advantage of hair follicle tests is their ability to detect drug use over a much longer span, typically up to 90 days. They are conducted under direct observation and are extremely difficult to falsify. Yet, urine tests remain the most accurate for recent drug use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as a robust means for detecting alcohol and drug usage. By capturing biomarkers in the fibers of the growing hair, hair provides a prolonged history of drugs and alcohol. Collected near the scalp, hair can offer around a three-month detection timeframe for both alcohol and drugs. The collection process is straightforward, it is challenging to tamper with, and shipment is uncomplicated.

A 1.5-inch section comprising roughly 200 strands of hair (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the ideal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. It is suggested to measure the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable amount of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The main steps in laboratory processing of a drug test result are: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the sample's initial processing into a lab's system. This process ensures that the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and covers any extra data entry omitted by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as a preliminary quick check for drug abuse presence. While Screening effectively rules out drug usage for most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for court admissibility. Samples indicated as presumptively positive during Screening need further confirmation.

If a sample indicates a presumptive positive result in the Screening stage, further hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening a challenging methodology.

Positive screening results are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is reviewed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests detect drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection window.
  • Resilience to cheating: Cheating a hair drug test is notably difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Chronological data: It offers a usage pattern over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Recent use detection: Drugs require about 5-7 days before becoming detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the test actually analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Eagle, CO, hair follicle testing shows clear superiority over urine testing due to enhanced detection accuracy and reliability. The benefits of hair testing vastly outweigh traditional urine tests, ensuring superior results that are less prone to cheating.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
