Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug testing services in Dillon, Colorado. If you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol test, look no further. Accredited Drug Testing takes pride in our hair testing specialization, with locations across the nation capable of conducting hair tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body can be utilized. Our tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized options.

In recent years, hair follicle drug tests have become increasingly common in the realm of drug testing. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts often prefer hair drug tests over the traditional urine tests. Such tests are crucial for employers with strong anti-drug use policies, as well as for courts and probation monitoring. The main advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended detection window, typically reaching up to 90 days. The sample collection is observed, making tampering nearly impossible. However, for detecting recent drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most effective.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as a strong method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It retains a long-term record of these substances by capturing biomarkers in the fibers of the hair as it grows. When taken from near the scalp, hair offers about a 3-month period for detecting alcohol and other substances. It’s easy to gather, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent in thickness to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp weighs about 100mg, making it perfect for both initial screening and further analysis. For EtG, additional tests, and assessments exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. Using a jeweler's scale for specimen weighing is recommended. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent mass of body hair can be used instead. When mentioning head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair alone. Body hair denotes all other hair types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four key stages in the laboratory procedure for processing a drug test outcome: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is about the initial entry of a sample into a lab's system. This encompasses ensuring the sample was appropriately sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and entering any remaining data not included via an electronic chain of custody.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening effectively eliminates drug usage across most samples, a court-admissible positive screen requires confirmation. Any samples that test presumptive positive in Screening need subsequent confirmation.

If Screening hints a positive result, additional hair is taken from the sample and made ready for Extraction. At this juncture, drugs are isolated from hair at substantially lower concentrations than alternative methods (for example, urine or oral fluid), making hair drug assessment the most intricate approach to administer.

Confirmation for any positive screen involves GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Each presumptive positive sample undergoes washing before confirmation if necessary. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the entire lab process is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can identify drug consumption up to 90 days preceding the test, unlike urine tests that have shorter detection periods.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating is extremely challenging with hair drug tests, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical use data: It gives a usage pattern over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Recent consumption detection: It requires around 5-7 days for drugs to register in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments are generally higher in cost than other testing types.
  • Result inconsistencies: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Frequently called "hair follicle tests," the analysis actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
