Accredited Drug Testing offers full-scale hair follicle drug screening in West Hollywood, California. Should you require a hair drug or alcohol examination, Accredited Drug Testing is proficient in conducting these tests, with facilities located in cities across the nation. Typically, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown or body is required. Tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specific needs.

Recently, the approach to drug screening has increasingly employed hair follicle testing. This method is favored by employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals over the conventional urine analysis. Zero-tolerance organizations, legal entities, and probationary monitors utilize hair follicle tests for their extended detection window, typically up to 90 days, collected in an observed environment ensuring minimal chance of evasion. Nonetheless, for recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective means to uncover drug and alcohol consumption. The hair strand captures biomarkers from alcohol and drugs, which accumulate in the fibers as it grows. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal the presence of substances over nearly a 90-day period. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient for transportation.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (similar in thickness to a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both screening and confirmation purposes. For tests involving EtG, additional panels, or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be taken. The term "head hair" specifically pertains to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" encompasses all other types of hair (such as facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result entails four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning deals with the sample's initial integration into a lab’s system. This stage verifies the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplemental data input not managed by an electronic chain of custody mechanism.

Screening serves as a preliminary evaluation for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a budget-friendly option for excluding drug use in most cases, a positive result must undergo confirmation to be legally viable. Presumptively positive samples in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

For samples that are presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are painstakingly extracted at a much lower concentration than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing uniquely challenging to perform.

Confirmation of any positive screening is carried out via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumptively positive are washed before confirmation if required. The whole laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation alongside ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection interval: Hair drug tests can identify drug use dating back up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which offer a shorter window.
  • Resistance to cheating: Hair drug tests are difficult to manipulate, providing more reliable results.
  • Records historical use: It reveals a timeline of drug usage over a period, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Delayed detection for recent use: It takes around 5-7 days for hair to reflect drug presence.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally costlier compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Though commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the focus is on analyzing the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Comparing hair follicle tests to traditional urine tests in West Hollywood reveals numerous advantages. Hair testing provides superior detection accuracy and reliability, making it the preferred choice for many employers and legal entities. The method's extended detection window captures drug use over months, not just days, offering a comprehensive examination that urine tests can't match.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle tests in West Hollywood afford a long-term view of drug use, capturing up to 90 days of history. This extensive detection window equips employers with detailed insights into an individual's substance habits, making it an indispensable tool when evaluating long-term patterns rather than short-term activities typical of urine tests.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In West Hollywood, hair follicle testing is revered for its resistance to tampering. Unlike urine specimens, which can be easily adulterated, hair samples significantly lower the chance of manipulation. This ensures that the results are genuine and unquestionable, bolstering trust amongst stakeholders relying on the proven accuracy of tests.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
