Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Glendale, California. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol assessment, we are experts in this area, with testing facilities across the nation ready to conduct a hair analysis. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for specific needs.

Over recent years, hair follicle testing has gained popularity for drug assessments. Employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists now often opt for hair testing rather than urine testing. This method is favored by organizations with strict no-drug policies, judicial systems, and for probation monitoring. Its advantage lies in detecting drug use for a duration of up to 90 days, ensuring observed sample collection, and hindering any form of test evasion. Yet, for identifying very recent drug use (within five days), urine tests remain superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as a potent approach for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. It offers a prolonged record of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. Collected near the scalp, hair can yield a detection span of up to roughly 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Collection of hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (akin to a #2 pencil's size) nearest to the scalp will produce 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for initial and confirmatory testing. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, it is advisable to collect 150mg of the sample. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. In cases where scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equivalent quantity of body hair is acceptable. When discussing head hair, it refers solely to scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other types of hair (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages in the laboratory processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the primary processing of a sample into a lab’s system. This step includes verifying proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial swift assessment for substance abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive Screen result requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples that yield presumptive positives in Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

In the event of a presumptive positive result during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Preparation. In this phase, substances are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other processes (e.g., urine or oral fluid), hence hair drug testing is regarded as the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive result from screening is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples indicated as presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation as deemed necessary. The entire processing journey from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair testing can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, compared to shorter detection periods of urine tests.
  • Challenge to circumvent: Cheating a hair drug test is highly problematic, resulting in more accurate findings.
  • Holds chronological data: It offers a traceable pattern of drug use over time, not just immediate usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Detection in hair takes about 5-7 days post substance use.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests come at a higher cost compared to other methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal variations in hair growth may influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair shaft and not the root beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When it comes to choosing between hair follicle testing and urine testing in Glendale, CA, the former provides notable advantages. Hair tests excel in detection accuracy and reliability, often uncovering drug use over a longer period. This provides a wider window of evidence compared to urine tests, which have a much narrower detection range.

The comprehensive nature of hair follicle testing gives it an upper edge, making it indispensable for positions with stringent drug use policies. While urine tests might be suitable for catching recent use, hair tests offer a more substantial overview of an individual’s history, which is particularly crucial in many employment scenarios.

Extended Detection Window

In Glendale, CA, hair follicle testing offers an extended detection window for drug use, spanning up to 90 days. This extended timeframe provides employers with a thorough insight into an applicant or employee's history, far beyond what traditional urine tests can cover. This advantage makes it a preferred choice for maintaining a drug-free environment.

The ability to view such a comprehensive span of substance use helps organizations enforce policies diligently, ensuring that they are making informed decisions based on a detailed understanding of an individual's past behavior.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

For those concerned about the reliability of drug testing methods in Glendale, CA, hair follicle testing showcases significant resistance to sample adulteration. This testing method minimizes the risk of tampering, which can sometimes compromise other types of drug tests, ensuring trustworthy results.

The stringent collection process associated with hair follicle testing ensures that individuals cannot manipulate the outcome. This heightened level of integrity is crucial for organizations and judicial entities that rely on untainted results to make informed decisions.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
