Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening available in Sebastopol, CA. Whether you require a drug or alcohol assessment, we specialize in hair analysis, with facilities nationwide ready to conduct tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your scalp or body is needed. Hair screenings can be tailored for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other needs.

Lately, drug assessments increasingly incorporate hair follicle methods. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse specialists favor hair screenings over traditional urine tests. These tests are ideal for zero-tolerance work environments, legal requirements, and probation monitoring. Their advantage is the extended detection window, up to 90 days. The testing process is witnessed, making it nearly impossible to tamper with. For detecting recent drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Recognized as an effective method, hair testing aids in identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fabric of the developing hair strand. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer nearly a 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, tampering is relatively challenging, and it ships effortlessly.

A 1.5-inch collection of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the perfect sample size for evaluation and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the speciman is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample. If scalp hair isn’t accessible, a similar quantity of body hair can be gathered. When mentioning head hair, it specifically pertains to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

Four key stages are integral in the lab processing of a drug test outcome: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary processing of a sample into a lab’s system, involving verification of seal and shipment accuracy, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers a primary swift review for substances of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient approach to exclude drug use for most samples, a positive outcome requires confirmation to be court-admissible. Any samples that suggest positivity in Screening mandate a follow-up confirmation.

Should a sample indicate a positive result in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the primary specimen and processed for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations than in alternate methodologies (like urine or oral fluid), hence hair drug screening is the most intricate methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples suspected to be positive are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and meets the ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection span.
  • Difficult to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is notably tough, resulting in more precise outcomes.
  • Offers historical insights: It reveals a drug use pattern over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent use: It requires roughly 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than alternate drug testing techniques.
  • Outcome variability: Variables like hair color and individual disparity in hair growth can impact the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", analysis is conducted on the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
