Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Santa Rosa, California. If you're in need of a hair or alcohol test, our centers are strategically located in every major city Nationwide and capable of conducting hair tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, either from the scalp or body, suffices for the analysis. Our testing covers drugs, alcohol/ETG, alongside tailored options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent. More frequently, employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts favor hair tests over standard urine screenings. Organizations enforcing zero-tolerance towards drug use, along with courts and probationers, utilize these tests. Their key advantage is an extended detection window up to 90 days, collected through direct observation, minimizing chances of tampering. Nevertheless, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective means for detecting the use of drugs and alcohol. Hair offers a long-term record of alcohol and drug consumption by trapping biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. When taken close to the scalp, hair can provide a detection window of up to roughly three months for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to falsify, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising about 200 hair strands (equivalent to the girth of a #2 pencil) near the scalp will yield 100mg, which is ideal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. In cases where scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. Referring to head hair specifically means scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory process for analyzing drug test results consists of four core steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary step of processing a sample into the laboratory's system. This step ensures the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data entry that an electronic chain of custody system does not cover.

Screening serves as a preliminary examination for substance abuse. Although Screening is economical for ruling out drug use in the majority of samples, a positive screen must be authenticated to be valid in legal contexts. Samples with a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate a confirming secondary examination.

When Screening indicates a presumptive positive, additional hair is gathered from the initial specimen for the Extraction phase. In Extraction, drugs are drawn from hair at much lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging methodology to conduct.

Positive results from screenings are confirmed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with a presumptive positive are washed prior to confirmation as needed. The comprehensive laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter window.
  • High resistance to tampering: Hair drug tests are difficult to manipulate, leading to more reliable results.
  • Historical usage patterns: Provides a timeline of drug use rather than just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent drug use: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to become evident in hair.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug tests generally incur more costs than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual growth patterns can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the examination actually assesses the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
