Located in Placerville, California, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments. With expertise in hair and alcohol testing, our centers operate across the nation ready for hair sample collection. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is needed. Various substances including drugs and alcohol/ETG can be screened using hair tests.

Hair follicle tests have increasingly become a preferred method for drug assessment in recent years. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals often opt for hair tests over urine tests. They are chosen by those with strict no-drug policies due to the extended detection period, up to 90 days, secured by supervised collection. To detect drug use within the past 5 days, however, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. Hair captures a historical record of substance use by embedding biomarkers within its strands as it grows. When taken from near the scalp, it offers about a 90-day scope of detection for both alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, tougher to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A segment of hair measuring 1.5 inches, with approximately 200 strands (comparable to a #2 pencil), close to the scalp provides 100mg, which is the optimal amount for testing and validation. For EtG tests, additional parameters, or tests exceeding ten panels, a collection of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler's scale to weigh the hair sample. If scalp hair is not present, a proportional amount of body hair can be used. By head hair, we mean only the hair on the scalp. Other hair types such as facial or axillary hair are termed as body hair.

Process Overview

The drug test laboratory process encompasses these primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the act of logging a sample into a lab's database. This process verifies the sample's seal and proper delivery, assigns a Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN) randomly, and completes additional details not covered by an electronic chain of custody record.

Screening is a preliminary assessment to identify the presence of abusive drugs. It serves as an economical method to dismiss drug use in most samples, yet any positive results require confirmation to be legally admissible. Samples with presumptive positive results from screening mandate further verification.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the sample for the Extraction phase. This stage isolates drugs from hair at significantly lower levels than other testing methods like urine or oral fluid samples, which contributes to the complexity of hair drug testing.

For positive results from Screening, a Confirmation is performed using analytical techniques such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any samples testing positive are cleansed prior to confirmation as necessary. From Accessioning through to Confirmation, the complete lab process is audited under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines alongside ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Capable of identifying drug use for up to three months, in contrast to the shorter timeframe in urine tests.
  • Difficult to manipulate: The challenge of falsifying hair test results increases their reliability.
  • Provides historical insights: Offers insight into drug usage patterns over time rather than immediate consumption.

Limitations:

  • Lacks immediate use detection: Drugs typically become traceable in hair after 5-7 days.
  • Expense: They often incur higher costs relative to other testing strategies.
  • Variability in outcomes: Drug metabolite levels in hair can fluctuate due to factors such as hair color and individual growth rates.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the actual assessment targets the hair strand rather than the follicle below the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
