Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Cameron Park, California. If a hair drug or alcohol test is necessary, we specialize in hair testing, with centers available across various cities nationwide to conduct such tests. Typically, having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head's crown or body is required in most instances. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized options.

Over recent years, hair follicle drug testing has become a more prevalent method for drug testing. Numerous employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals now prefer hair drug tests over conventional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are favored by employers with zero-tolerance policies, legal courts, and individuals on probation. The key advantage of a hair follicle test is its extended drug detection period, up to 90 days, collected in a monitored process and is nearly impossible to deceive. However, for detecting drug use in the past 5 days, the urine test remains the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly perceived as a robust method for detecting alcohol and drug use. Hair offers a comprehensive timeline of drug and alcohol intake by capturing biomarkers within the developing hair fibers. When obtained near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol presence for a duration of up to 90 days. The collection process for hair is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and convenient to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches, comprising roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the circumference of a #2 pencil) close to the scalp will yield 100mg, an exemplary sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or examinations surpassing 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advisable. We suggest measuring the sample on a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is lacking, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. Head hair exclusively implies scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary steps in the lab processing of a drug test outcome: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory's system. This stage ensures the sample was securely sealed and properly shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplementary data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial rapid check for drug abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient means to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for court admissibility. Samples that yield a presumptive positive result during Screening require additional confirmation.

In instances where a sample shows a presumptive positive in the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. Drugs are isolated from hair at notably lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluids), underscoring hair drug testing as a challenging methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screen is via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning through Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can identify drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine testing which offers a shorter window.
  • Hard to falsify: It is exceptionally challenging to deceive a hair drug test, thereby enhancing accuracy of results.
  • Tracks historical usage: Hair testing can outline a pattern of drug use over time, beyond just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Detection in hair requires approximately 5-7 days post drug intake.
  • Cost implications: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite commonly being called "hair follicle tests", this test analyzes the hair strand above the scalp, not the follicle itself.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
