Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments across Scottsboro, Alabama. For those requiring hair drug or alcohol evaluations, our specialty lies in hair testing. With facilities nationwide, including all major cities, we're equipped for such assessments. Adequate hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches is essential, though body hair may suffice. Our tests analyze for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customized hair assessments.

Lately, employing hair follicle testing for drug evaluations has become more common. Numerous employers, judiciary systems, and substance abuse specialists now favor hair tests over traditional urine analyses. Employers enforcing strict drug-free environments, courts, and probationers often utilize hair tests. These tests offer a significant advantage with an extended drug use detection span, often up to 90 days, through an observed process, reducing cheating possibilities. Yet, urine tests remain the most precise for recent 5-day use checks.

What it is, How it works

Utilizing hair for testing has emerged as a potent method for identifying the usage of drugs and alcohol. Hair holds a prolonged record of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When obtained near the scalp, hair offers up to a 3-month window for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of approximately 200 hair strands (equivalent to the width of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for screening and confirmation tests. For EtG and additional tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of material is advisable. It is suggested to weigh the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be acquired, a comparable quantity of body hair may be collected. When mentioning head hair, it pertains to scalp hair only. Body hair envelopes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary phases in the laboratory handling of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into the lab system. This process includes checking that the sample was securely sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary swift check for prohibited drugs. Screening is a cost-efficient way to exclude drug consumption in most samples, but a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be valid in legal proceedings. Any samples that test presumptively positive during Screening require a secondary verification.

If a sample is identified as presumptively positive during the Screening phase, more hair is retrieved from the initial sample and set for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are removed from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other approaches (e.g., urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug testing is the most challenging method to execute.

Any positive screening outcome is confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed prior to confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 regulations.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can trace drug use up to 90 days, rather than urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is very difficult, leading to more accurate results.
  • Offers historical data: Provides a pattern of drug consumption over a timeframe, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Not effective for recent use detection: It usually takes 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier than other testing methods.
  • Result variation: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: While often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand and does not examine the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
