Understanding Drug Tests
A drug test involves technical analysis of a biological specimen—such as urine, hair, blood, sweat, breath or saliva—to detect the presence or absence of specific drugs or metabolites. It is primarily used in athletics to detect performance-enhancing steroids, by employers and officers to screen for illegal substances, and by law enforcement to measure alcohol levels. Different methodologies, with varying detection thresholds and timelines, exist. Additionally, drug tests may include quantitative chemical analysis of illegal substances.
Can Passive Marijuana Smoke Cause False Positives?
"Passive" inhalation from secondhand marijuana smoke is unlikely to produce false positives, as cutoff levels are set well above exposure from passive inhalation.
Errors in urine screens may sometimes result in false negatives or intentional sample tampering. For instance:
- Low creatinine levels can suggest tampering through dilution or direct water addition.
- Creatinine levels, paired with specific gravity, help identify dilution attempts. Testing facilities often color toilet water blue to prevent sample dilution.
- Attempting to introduce enzymes to stabilize samples may alter pH, which is routinely tested.
Drug Detection Durations
The detection window or look-back period of a drug test is influenced by multiple factors, including:
- The drug quantity ingested
- Frequency of drug use
- Type of drug
- An individual’s metabolic rate and health
- Fluid intake following drug use
- Physical activity following drug use
- Genetic differences affecting drug processing

Local Area Info: Visalia, California
Visalia (/va??se?li?/ vy-SAYL-ee-?) is a city situated in the agricultural San Joaquin Valley of California, approximately 230 miles (370 km) southeast of San Francisco, 190 miles (310 km) north of Los Angeles, 36 miles (58 km) west of Sequoia National Park and 43 miles (69 km) south of Fresno. The population was 130,104 as of a 2015 U.S. Census Bureau estimate.
The area around Visalia was first settled by the Yokuts and Mono Native American tribes hundreds of years ago. It is unknown when the first Europeans arrived, but the first to make a written record of the area was Pedro Fages in 1722.
When California achieved statehood in 1850, Tulare County did not exist. The land that is now Tulare County was part of the huge County of Mariposa. In 1852, some pioneers settled in the area, then called Four Creeks. The area got its name from the many watershed creeks and rivers flowing from the Sierra Nevada Mountains. All the water resulted in a widespread swampy area with a magnificent oak forest. The industrious group of settlers petitioned the state legislature for county status and on July 10 of that same year, Tulare County became a reality.
