Accredited Drug Testing provides various testing methods to meet customer requirements. Urine testing, detecting substances over a 1 to 5-day period, is predominantly used by employers, courts, and schools. Common Urine and Hair Drug Tests Explained

A 5-panel test is common for both urine and hair samples, but the detection timeframe varies. A urine test can trace substances over a period of 1-5 days, whereas a hair test extends this window to up to 90 days post-collection.

Choosing the Appropriate Drug Testing Panel

Drug testing panels, indicating the number of drugs screened, vary from 5, 10, to 12 panels. Customized screenings are available as needed.

Introduction to Drug Testing

A drug test examines a biological specimen such as urine, hair, blood, breath, sweat, or saliva to detect the presence of parent drugs or their metabolites. This process is crucial in identifying performance-enhancing drugs in sports, screening prohibited substances by employers and legal officers, and police-administered BAC (blood alcohol content) checks, primarily conducted using a breathalyzer. While urinalysis is prominent in sports and workplace settings, other methods vary in accuracy and effectiveness. Additionally, drug tests may provide quantitative analysis to support responsible use.

Impact of Passive Marijuana Smoke

"Passive" exposure to marijuana smoke does not constitute a valid test result due to higher laboratory analysis thresholds set above potential levels from passive exposure.

Abnormalities in urine screenings can signal false negatives or tampered samples, such as:

  • Low creatinine levels might suggest sample dilution, either from excessive water intake before testing or added water.
  • Creatinine levels combined with specific gravity tests help identify diluted samples. Testing facilities may also use colored toilet water to prevent sample tampering.
  • Adding certain enzymes may affect sample stability but often alters pH levels, which are tested for deviations.

Duration of Drug Presence in the Body

The detection window for drug tests varies due to several factors. Factors impacting drug retention include:

  • Quantity of the drug consumed
  • Frequency of use
  • Specific drug type
  • Individual metabolic rate and overall health
  • Fluid intake after consumption
  • Level of physical activity post-consumption
  • Genetic variations affecting individual drug responses

Local Area Info: Portsmouth, Virginia

The Norfolk Naval Shipyard, often called the Norfolk Navy Yard, is a historic and active U.S. Navy facility that is actually located in Portsmouth rather than Norfolk; the original name "Gosport" was changed to "Norfolk" to reflect its location in what is now the former Norfolk County, Virginia. The shipyard upgrades, remodels, and repairs ships of the US Navy and is one of the few facilities in the world with the capability to dry dock an aircraft carrier.

Directly opposite Norfolk, the city of Portsmouth also has miles of waterfront land on the Elizabeth River as part of the harbor of Hampton Roads. There is a ferry boat that takes riders back and forth across the water between downtown Norfolk and the Portsmouth Olde Towne Historic District.

Portsmouth is located on the western side of the Elizabeth River directly across from the City of Norfolk. In 1620, the future site of Portsmouth was recognized as suitable shipbuilding location by John Wood, a shipbuilder, who petitioned King James I of England for a land grant. The surrounding area was soon settled as a plantation community.
