According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 34.9 square miles (90.5 km²), of which, 34.5 square miles (89.4 km²) of it is land and 0.4 square miles (1.1 km²) of it (1.17%) is water.

As of the census of 2000, there were 2,005 people, 662 households, and 544 families residing in the town. The population density was 58.1 people per square mile (22.4/km²). There were 680 housing units at an average density of 19.7 per square mile (7.6/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 98.70% White, 0.15% African American, 0.05% Native American, 0.10% Asian, 0.15% from other races, and 0.85% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.70% of the population.

There were 662 households out of which 41.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 73.9% were married couples living together, 4.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 17.8% were non-families. 13.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 5.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
