Onion Creek is located at 30°8?28?N 97°47?21?W? / ?30.14111°N 97.78917°W? / 30.14111; -97.78917 (30.141145, -97.789188), 10 miles (16 km) south of downtown Austin. In November 2013, AT&T announced that the Onion Creek neighborhood would become one of four Austin neighborhoods to get their new GigaPower high speed internet service.
As of the census of 2000, there were 2,116 people, 1,002 households, and 742 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 656.1 people per square mile (253.7/km²). There were 1,038 housing units at an average density of 321.9/sq mi (124.5/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 93.10% White, 1.18% African American, 0.28% Native American, 1.13% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 2.65% from other races, and 1.61% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 9.12% of the population.
There were 1,002 households out of which 12.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 69.5% were married couples living together, 3.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 25.9% were non-families. 21.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.11 and the average family size was 2.41.
